Phoenix Race this Friday September 9th
Phoenix Race this Friday September 9th
Hi Everyone,
Our Mid-Ohio race will be televised on September 17 at 12 Noon Eastern time on Speedtv, check your local listing for programming changes.
We had two new drivers with us at Ohio, Joe Toussaint of Texas, and Fred Pignataro of NY. They teamed up on the #02 car and would get up to speed over the three-days of wet and dry practice we had. Steve Pattee would co-drive with me in the #20car. Mid-Ohio is a very technical track, which is easy to learn but difficult to get really fast on.
Our crew did an exceptional job of preparing the cars and during the pit stops, they were fast and flawless.
But Mid-Ohio would turn out to be not one of our better races this year. Our drivers were off the pace during qualifying and we never were able to catch up. We did manage to survive with only minor bumps and bruises and a stop and go to remove some bodywork that was half knocked off by another car.
I on the other hand ended up at track medical after getting out of the racecar and later was sent to hospital for treatment from heat exhaustion. While I was in pretty bad shape for a while, two of my friends where worse off. They were involved in a turn one crash during the morning practice before the race. One was airlifted out and later went to surgery for broken pelvis, fema and tailbone. He has been released and is currently at home recovering. The second driver broadsided the first at over one hundred MPH in turn one after the first spun in front of him. He also went to the hospital where he was treated for two broken feet. He is also home and recovering.
This was probably the worst racing crash we have seen this year. Had it not been for all the safety equipment both these guys may have been killed.
On a positive note, we have been getting ready for our next race at Phoenix International Raceway in Goodyear Arizona. Our race is Friday Sept 9th at 3PM so be sure and come out an say hello. This will be a split race format so only the ST (our class) will race together. This will give us a shot at an overall win. The PIR track is a technically tight track, which should fair well for the great handling of our MINI’s.
Our driver lineup will be Mark Powell of Oregon and Bob Miller of Maryland in the #02 car. Steve Pattee will again team with me in the #20 car.
Thanks to all the MINI fans that stopped by and gave us their support. It was great to see such a large fan turnout.

Thanks for the qualifying udpate 0_MINI. Looks like Tony and Team is running their race in about 3 hours (4pm PST). Just checked the weather, and it's not good: over 100, with an electrical storm...
I like the idea of the split race, and wish the they would go back to that for all of their races. GT is going tomorrow...
Be safe Tony!

Damn!
Moved up to 9th... then on lap 29 (or 26), turn 6, the #20 MINI crashed, and apparently rolled, landing on all fours
. Tony was driving, and appears to be alright...
Damage to the car seems to be significant

Yeah, the announcers said the large piece of "Mini" debris was the door panel! Tony was up and out though... they took the car back to the garage but I couldnt get close enough to see the actual damage. Good thing though everyone is safe and sound.
I had a good seat in Turn 2 to see Tony duck under a few people as he made his way through the field and into the top ten. When he passed I believe the 98 car in turn 2 they looked to maybe have a little contact. Purely speculation, but I'm wondering if the "incident" on the other side of the track was maybe caused by a little more bump and grind?

Nice pics yzdj!
At the Grand American site, they say "the No. 20 MiniCooper went off-course at Turn 6 and barrel-rolled in Turn 7 before coming to rest in the gravel trap. The driver was able to restart the car and return to its pit." Ouch!
The Powell/Miller car finished 14, 7 laps down.
Another tough weekend for Team Nuzzo.

I'm ready to read Tony's report of the race that he give's on this site and on his site. I really want to hear what happen. I think there is only one other race this year so maybe the car will be ready again for next year.
Hi All,
I appreciate everyone concerns. I'm okay. The car will be fixed and ready for the season finale at VIR. I hope to see many of you there. I haven't written my post race story yet for a couple of reasons, first I was busy assessing damage from memory and photos since the cars won't be back until tomorrow. Second I'm still pretty p'd at myself. Third I haven't thought about what to write yet. I always write straight forward reports from the heart. And I need few days to get over my disappointment.
I do want to point out that the sequence of shots above is the car without the door is me driving back to the pits after the rollover. I would have continued racing but the windshield was broken and the officials wouldn't allow me to continue.

Tony, I am glad that you are ok, physically at least. I can't imagine all that is/was going through your head... I look forward to reading your race report. Take your time though...
VIR has been a good track for you guys!!! End the season in glory

Tony,
I would be very interested to hear any news on what caused your passenger door to fail. From the photos that I have seen, it looks like the door frame is largely inact.
I live in an area where the a local auto club has an issue with the safety of the MINI and is quoting concerns over the doors on a MINI coming open in crash situations.
Thanks for any info.

We'll be racing at Daytona next Friday at 2:15 lets see a lot of fans out there.
Regarding the door. My doors are made to be removed in the pits for easy access, just by lifting them off the hinge. So when the emergency workers got there they removed it to see if I was okay. I told them to put it back but they put it in the truck instead. Hence me driving back with the door off.. May for good TV but not what I wanted.
The stock doors are solid and have no issue what so ever about functioning like any other production car under normal conditions or during a crash.
