Navigation & Audio Minidisc Reciever...Stock!!!
On the Mini international site they offer a minidisc reciever as an option. Does anybody think that I would be able to order it as a part, and have it installed at my Mini dealer here in CT. Would I be better to just get an aftermarket reciever?

Um people actually use Minidisc still? Last I heard Sony was pulling them off the shelves in America for bad sales and lack of interest. The Japanese and many Euro cultures are all over using MiniDiscs, its not a CD yet, nor will it ever be a CD replacement, but i feel that will be coming with a new DVD standard.
[NOTE]
Not trying to knock you or the format, but Americans are so engrained into never changing, I personally think we should definately be changing to metric!

I'm sure you can, at the very least, order it from a dealer in the UK. But this of course would eliminate your ability to play cds - granted you're probably are aware of that .

dont listen to these 2 mate! mini discs are massively superior to cd's, and if u have a minidisc player/recorder at home then it makes no differnce if sony pull them off the market cos the hole point is that u record your own onto a blank disc, you dont buy them prerecorded. How often do cd's just have 1 or 2 good songs on!
Im in england and they are an option here and i would definatly recommend, tho personally when my mini arrives im goin for the aftermarket new sony mex-hd mp3 player cos it can store all your music on it anyway and completly negate the need for haviong cd's or discs in your car anyway. does cost £800 tho, which is about $1200 i believe, but hey its only money!

I am in the US, and I huge fan of MD, have been from inception. So far I have been looking into the R-speed hack to get my MDLP portable to work in my MCS. I would love to be able to get a OEM MD unit for my MINI -- if any of you overseas folks are planing on upgrading your receiver -- I'll buy your old MD receiver. I would love to have complete control of my MDs from my multifunction steering wheel as I do now for my CD. Personally I prefer to leave my CDs at home, copy them onto MD and use that media for portability -- which is what it is designed for. Besides I can copy five or more CDs onto a single MD.
MD was the naturaly evolution of the cassette, its a shame that the RIAA crippled the medium way back when.
Send me a private message if you have an original MD receiver that you would like to go to a good American home.
Assuming I cannot find someone overseas looking to ditch their MD receiver -- I'll start contacting UK dealers.

I'm totally a fan of the Minidisc and the idea behind it. I just personally enjoy only havng to deal with one kind of media; be it in my laptop, cd burner, DVD/VCD player, or my car. It's nice to be able to make a mix CD for a trip and once I get where I'm going be able to throw it in a friends stereo.

Aren't the FM and AM bands different in the UK than they are in the US? If so, you would only be able to listen to your minidiscs. I'm sure it is probably not an issue for you though.
On a side note. I'm looking to get a mini, probably an 'S'. I plan on using my iPod with it. I love the iPod. It is the only thing I listen to in the car

Minidisc rules! For those who have used it and know what it can do, you know why. Unlike an MP3 player, you are never limited to memory you have on your player. ANother plus is a single $2 disc can hold about 5 hours of near cd quality music. You would need a $150+ memory card to hold that much music. It has its advantages over CDs because of its size, and because you are able to rewrite a minidisc about 1 million times! Americans that haven't adapted minidisc are blind. Long live MD!!!
Not to put down the Mini Disc but my solution is attaching my iPod to my mini via a Blitzsafe adapter. It's smaller than a deck of cards, holds 10 gig (over 2200 songs as I've found out), is infinitly re-writable, and you obviously don't have to ever buy blank discs. Plus it doubles as a home stereo (with an amp and speakers) as well as a portable player for working out etc. It's also got calendar and contact functionality built in. This is all on top of the fact that it's also a 10 gig firewire hardrive for storage should you want to use it that way. There's also a 20gig available and a 40gig rumored to coming out soon.
There are other hardrive based players out there but nothing comes close to matching the size, looks, and sophitication of the interface.
my two cents

Yeah yeah, the ipod is a good player, but like most MP3 players, you are limited. Most people will say that it it almost impossible to fill up 10 or 20 gigs full of MP3's and it is hard, but it can be done. Lets face it, searching through all that music is a lot harder than choosing a disc. Since the advent of MDLP and NetMD, you can write up to 5 hours and 20 minutes of music to a 2 dollar disc at 32x speeds. Also, replacing the CD reciever with a great looking MD unit will increase your output and give you the freedom of MD. This is my two cents as well.
Check E-Bay, they pop up from time to time and installation should be a straight swap.
As for the format, MD is great but as others have mentioned the RIAA crippled it...
Also, as far as the AM/FM bands go, you should be able to set it to USA mode in the hidden menu. Besides, the Europeans use all freqs in the band (odd and even) where the USA only uses the odd band. So you should be able to pick up every station with no problems.
