Semi-Custom Exhaust

I'm going to be using a sorta-custom cat-back exhaust on my '02 S, and was wondering if anyone had this same set up.

I'm going to be using the rear section of the MCS Magnaflow exhaust (section with the 2 mufflers and the tips). This will be connected to the stock cat using a 3" pipe. Bends will be similar to stock, with the same hangers.

I'm hoping for better flow (obviously as the pipe is bigger) and more noise.

I'm just not sure how loud I'm looking at.

Anyone have any ideas?

Just curious.
Won't you be going from a 3" in to a 2.5" exhaust?
I don't see a lot of advantage in that.

As long as you're not as loud as Mine is you shouldn't have any problems. I have a 3 inch exhaust all the way back courtesy of the twincharger. I am running a single non baffled 3 inch in and out race muffler. At WOT it sounds as if it is redlining at 22,000 rpm.

Yep that makes sense. Only going to be doing 2.5" all the way back then, unless I replace all the pipes that is.

With no resonator it should sound nice.
3" all the way through would be pretty beefy. Might be a tad heavy too.

If he is going from a single 3" to dual 2.5" pipes it will work wonderfully.

There will still be a pinch point where he transitions from 3" to 2.5". Unless he were to heavily modify the entrance to the ring that is the back section of a Magnaflow systems.
Doable but not in the description of what was going to be done.
So unless that's done it won't work wonderfully.

I will hopefully not be heavily modifying anything. I'm trying to get the most for the $, so if it's easier just to go 2.5" back and skip the resonator, I may just have to do that.

I was also thinking that instead of a resonator, I could go with a glass pack...hmmmm...

If you do go that route pay a bit more for one that uses stainless wool. The traditional glass batting lasts about 10K miles before it compresses and becomes junk.

Just use a straight pipe and throw a roll of header tape around the section just under the front seats

Kidding.

Haha. It sounds bad, but I'm kinda cheap.

I'm looking to get a "decent" exhaust for as little $ as possible. I can get a 18" glasspack off Ebay for like $20, prob. pretty crappy, but then it's only $20, right?

I figure I can do the whole system for less than the Megan cat-back.

If he maintains the 3" all the way to the "y" it won't have a pinch point. 3" pipe split into 2 2.5" pipes is not going to be resriticted. I thought that's what he was implying.

With the Magnaflow back box, there is a piece of 2.5" pipe, which then goes into a T connecting to the mufflers. I am now thinking that due to the piece here, and the fact that the pipes coming from the mufflers to the tips are also 2.5", going with 3" may be a bit excessive. It would provide more flow for a bit, but then it goes back to the 2.5"

The short tail piece in this pic. That's the chunk Scott and I are discussing.
If you chopped it off as he suggests the 3" would probably work but that adds to expense, not much though.

When you speck out the "glass pack" make sure you get one the has a perforated internal pipe rather that the louvered ones, they flow better.

That has the louvers that Norm was warning against and he's right.
Flow tech. They make some called Purple Hornies too if I remember right.

Yeah, I was looking at those, the Purple Hornies, but they are either 3" both ends or 2.25" all around. not going to help me there. Plus, they are louvered as well.

I wasn't really too concerned with longevity, looking to be loud and somewhat unique, as well as cheap.

I'm planning on that.

I think I'll have the whole system built, shipped and installed for less than the Meghan Racing exhaust before shipping. Not too shabby.

It's gonna be loud as all hell though
