M7 hood Scoop working?

I have the M7 hood scoop and the Alta air diverter. I drove around a little bit this morning and I just went out to clean the engine (which was about 4 hours later) and the intercooler was still pretty warm! I thought that with the hood scoop and new diverter my intercooler would be a lot cooler than with the stock set up. whats the deall?

It won't feel like ice. Also, if you're not going fast, a larger scoop doesn't do much, it needs air flow. At rest, heat soak will still occure. Improved flow should make it go away faster. But to quatify benefit, you'd have to log some data (T-MAP values would let you calculate post IC molecular density), or an upstream temp sensor so you can measure IC efficiency.

Also, after you stop, the heat will rise in under the hood, and parts at the top of the motor will get warm.

Next time you are driving with another Mini S buddy pull over together and immediately open the hoods and compare how the intercoolers feel. If you allow it to sit for any period of time the heat soak begins as soon as you stop moving. I've also noticed a LOT more dead bees wedged into the cooler fins than I ever saw before

Preliminary data-logging on the scoop has shown to me that it does indeed make a performance difference. On a constant 16.1 canyon/rural mile run, at 68 degree temps (rather late at night), this scoop yielded lower peaks, lower lows, and about 5 degrees lower IAT's in general when driving back home (8 miles) under WOT conditions...

Do you think that 5 degree IAT diffrence, is going to make more power? I would consider it if the IAT Temp dropped like 20 degree. But for 5 degree, The strange look is not worth it. My Opinion

For those of us who try nickel and dime all that we can, heck ya it's worth it, at least for me. I could have said early-on, it's only 5 pounds here, and 2 pounds there, and since that time, I've nearly lost 200 pounds. I take the same approach here as well...

Oh, and I stand corrected, the delta when driving back, under many WOT surges, was like 10 degrees. I forgot that while my ambient was done in F (per the MINI's display), the logging was done in C. Sorry about that...

And if that's not worth it, results of a more expensive IC are mixed, at best. Appearance, well, that's opinion. I personally am fine with it, but then I'm after results...

I'm with Tony here. 10 degrees cooler and we've got some nice hp gains. I love my M7 scoop. The reality here is that 90% of the people who look at my car don't even notice it. I like the look and unless you have seen one in person, don't judge it to quick.

Onasled,

You actually bored yours out a bit too, correct? How does this work with the diverter? Is it still effective?

Hello Tony.

My last dyno when the temps went up 5-7 degrees we lost about 6-8 whp.

Hello Tony.

Michael
I did do some angioplasty on mine, correct.
I had quite a few PMs about this topic, but answering them was difficult due to having no pictures and that I have a hard time with the written word. Basically what I did was to cut slits into each corner of the opening and then spread that opening adding around 1/2"+ to that opening in height.
The lower part of the opening now aligns perfectly with the IC. I also have the ability now to adjust the height of that lower opening lip.
I truly feel that I've increased air flow to the IC, in both volume and flow by a good amount.
Sorry, no numbers available. I do quite a lot with hydro dynamics and air flow as I am very involved in sailing. I build very fast RC boats..

Thanks Onasled. Never thought you had a problem with the written word , I've understood and appreciated every contribution.

I have a client who sails people boats and RC boats. He's a fanatic about the stuff!

Just to follow-up, the scoop also made a notable difference with the GRS IC. I'm going to refine it a bit, then send it back to Peter for a first class paint job...
