I heard a nasty rumour that the grill insert on the rear bumber on the cooper aero kit is actually just a transfer! is there any truth to this rumour and is this the same on the cooper s equivilent? Please tell me im wrong, cos this would disgust me if bmw have gone for a cheap 'boy racer' alterntive to a mesh gril.

cheers

It's just a rumor, the mesh on the "bumper" is made of plastic.

The rear "mesh" on the aerokit is just a sticker,

The best way I have seen to deal with that is to NOT install the sticker, but to have those areas of the kit painted black. mferguson did this on his MINI.

Here's a pic. I'll try to find one that shows it a little more closely.

I looked through my pics and found this one from the Yalla Yalla which shows the back of the kit painted black on mferguson's MINI a little better.

Well, that sucks! Why does the standard S have real mesh and the "upgraded" aero kit not?

The S doesn't exactly have real mesh either, it's just a molded plasic insert. But yeah, it is curious that MINI didn't choose to provide real mesh and cheaped out by including stickers.

cheers for the replies gents, its nice to have your fears realised! reckon ill prob just go for the sideskirts, but definaltly going for painted arches. I do like the blue s above, looks good wihtout the ***** sticker, mine is gonna be ds with black roof but would still look good with this i think.

Why not cut out the area and install your own mesh? It's not that big a deal. I've done this before on my '00 Civic SI front "brake ducts". They were just plastic pieces, so I cut them out and installed mesh. I'd think you could cut them out before having it painted...that way the body shop could smooth the edges from the cut. Then just epoxy the mesh to the back.

Kinda hard to see, but here's the SI after I did the "mesh install". I think this could work just fine for the rear aero.
