Interior/Exterior Alta Short-Shift Knob
where's UUC with their short-shifter. I have a UUC in my 3-series, and couldn't live without it. Rob...guys...you there?
oh, while I'm whining about needing new product, can someone do an illuminated stock-style shift ****; or all leather's great too.
thanx

Wow, that shifter is kinda strange...or least it seems that way to me. Apparently if you use either of the two outter settings (it has 3 settings, low/mid/high) low or high, that there is problems with stock dust shield? Not sure I'd want to remove that. Not to mention that you have to remove the exhaust to install this?
I know MINI-Madness has a really slick option in the works as well. I'm going to wait and see what all comes out on the market so as to make the best decision for me.

Yeah, it's a little work to install the Alta kit, but if you look at how the shifter is mounted in the MINI, there's pretty much no way to remove the lever without dropping the exhaust - it seems like it HAS to be done from underneath the car. The shift cable ball ends snap onto the shift lever ***** from below.
I have mine set to the "intermediate" position, and it feels similar to my '69 Lotus Elan, just a little longer throw. The shift lever itself is shorter, and the Momo **** can be positioned low on the lever if you like so the whole assembly is shorter.
The super short shift position causes the lever ball end that attaches to the cable under the car to hit the plastic cover on the assembly. I suppose if you wanted you could leave off the cover (not my favorite choice as it is beneath the car and potentially exposed to bad stuff) or modify it by adding a "power bulge" to the cover to clear the shift lever end (there's plenty of clearance under the car for this).
I think the only way to get a really short shift without having this problem would be to replace the large shift lever ball socket assembly (the one under the shifter boot) with a raised one, or find a way to remount the stock one in a raised position. Hmm.... good idea, maybe I'll look into that!

thewris is right, you will have to remove the exhaust no matter what you do, for any short shifter.
We do have the 3 settings, but it is there because if you are willing to remove the plastic cover under the shift linkage then you can make the shift even shorter. But also don't forget that any adjustment between the 3 points can be had.
Some people might be worried about taking the plastic cover off and exposing the linkage to weather. This is true, but the aluminum heat shield under the car keeps the dirt out very well. After 5000 miles of oregon(wet) driving, there was no sign of dust under the heat shield. We feel that the heat shield works well enough to keep the dirt out, and that is why we provide the 3rd, super short option.
We do have a thread-on **** that will be availible very soon. We will post pics on the site as soon as they are done. But in the mean time the MOMO **** will work, and so will other types like that use set screws.
Anyone that has tried our shifter will tell you how good and solid it feels.
