How does DSC "work"?

Like, as in operation. Not the fact that it sometimes messes the car up. Is it always on, unless you turn it off? Can it be programmed so that it is on only when you flip the toggle? Etc...

Thanks!

John

Basically.. its a yaw control. A yaw sensor monitors the cars angle as opposed to its intended inputs, steering angle, speed, etc...
It works with th ABS system to control each wheel individually as required.
The programming also uses the throttle control to reduce torque as required.
All these functions work together to control the car when its limits are detected. Great system to have as it doesn't add weight and it utilizies the existing systems being used for other purposes.

GBmimi.net (www.gbmini.net/MINIcircuit/) has an add-on gadget that disables the DSC at start-up.

Sorry! I meant superficially (though technical details are welcome and appreciated!). Like, how it interacts with the driver (toggles and what not).

There is one light and one toggle switch.
When the car is started, the DSC system is active and the light is off (after being on for a couple of seconds during self-test).
When the DSC system is active, it will attempt to "save" the car in the event that the driver pushes too hard. Note that the DSC system includes ASC+T which is a traction control system, which reduces wheel spin.

If you click the toggle switch, you turn the DSC system off and the light comes on to indicate that.
If you click the toggle switch again, you turn the DSC system on again, and the light goes out.

I'm the last one who should be talking about DSC (since I don't have it), but I believe, DCS is on normally. It's on when you start the car. There is a switch in the row of toggles (second from left) that has an LED on the end that lights up. If you want to turn it off, you can hit the toggle.

I seem to recall that there is a DSC light on the speedo that illuminates when it is off...that's what I remember it based on test drives in MINIs w/ DSC. (correct me if I'm wrong)

The ASC+T has a dash light, no light on the toggle.

It's a nice insurance policy - definitely keep it on in bad weather.
Ian (GBMINI) described the functionality.
As recommended earlier I would (and DID!) get Ian's 'auto-up/DSC' module which will allow you to keep DSC off on startup in desired situations. Note: Do NOT wreck your car when the DSC is off! It would really suck to wonder if it would have saved you!
