R50/53 Towncar vs. MCS
Towncar vs. MCS
So I'm sitting in my office bragging about my wife's MCS (staus en route) when an eaves dropping co-worker chimes in " you bought one of those? they have no style." He then proceeded to regale us with stories of his brand new 05 Town Car.
I had no rebuttal because none was necessary.

The MINI is totally too sublime for the drones that would not only BUY a Town Car, but openly brag about it. Coffin on wheels. Buncha dead guys drivin' em. They smell like mothballs from the factory. Pillows for springs. Room for twenty of your closest blue-haired friends. Take two spaces at the Early-Bird Seniors Buffet. Two-tone, three-tone, vinyl, and enough chrome to plate an entire MINI.
But hey, if that's your 'style'. . .
My dear ol' white-haired granny used to love her Caddies. Wanted a vehicle with some size to it. Smart woman, but I'd never attempt to explain the physics of that four-wheeled battleship striking any sensible vehicle at any real speed.
You'd be the death of any modern car, piloting that thing. Of course, I think most SUV's should require a CDL, and additional training. Force folks to purchase vehicles in the "class" they received their initial driver training in, and attend instruction before moving to a new class of vehicle.
But that's just me. Town Car, sheesh. I could wash my whole car in the time it takes to clean one spoked rim on that thing. Bet it's got whitewalls, too.
Cheers,
Matthew Z.

Awhile back, I picked up my husband at the mechanic's shop after he dropped off his truck. The mechanic came over to check out my MINI. He asked, "How much did you pay?" I said, "18-5." He said, "18-5!? 18-5?! I would pay 7! You could have had a Camry!!"

I rented a big ole land yacht a few weeks ago for a trip to San Diego. Tons of room, smooth as silk and it only cost $275 for the week. I wouldn't trade my MINI for it, but if you need to haul 4 people and their stuff 500 miles in a straight line the Land Yacht wins hands down
Town Cars are used for car service in NYC area, not a lot of class or driving satisfaction there.
But sometimes Land Yachts are fun. I have a 1969 Caddy Convertible which is a blast to pilot down the road; even seats up to four on the front bech seat. 375 HP. 525 lbs torque. Nice on a summer night. Feels like you are driving your couch down the street powered by a turbine
Can't corner worth a damn, but that's why I have a MINI! They both make me smile. But NO Town Car please!

I would rather drive a big Town Car or Deville over a big ponderous SUV. Think about it--those luxury cars are hugely powerful, smooth missiles designed to soak up plenty of highway miles on the interstate and they do it with good fuel economy
. A big thirsty SUV is designed to... um look tough and sell well.
Point is, they have a purpose and do it well. In the West where interstates run straight until they disappear over the curvature of the earth, handling can sometimes be secondary to comfort. SUVs are just minivans with jacked-up high floors and as a result have much less carrying capacity than a comparably sized AWD van.

Actually, the Lincoln Towncar rides in the same frame-on-chassis as the Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis. The Towncar only has different trim/styling and it is even longer than the Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis twins. The "Sportier" version of these cars is called the Mercury Marauder which was launched in 2001/2002 and was essentially a flop from the get go, because Ford detuned the car and the DOHC V8 engine lacked the low end grunt expected on a car marketed as a modern day interpretation of the 1960's "Muscle" car.
While Cadillac has successfully distanced itself from the "Geriatric" customer base they use to have, Ford still caters to Taxi/Limo companies and to old men that like to drive down the road in a couch on wheels. Every Towncar comes with a free subscription of AARP magazine and samples of Geritrol.
Remind your co-worker that his wonderful "new" Towncar rides on a chassis that was last designed in the year 1977, when Disco music and John Travolta were at the top of the charts
Many people don't know this, but the last Mustang rode on a chassis that was last designed in 1978 (Ford Fairmont) and it would be used for the next 25 years until the model was discontinued in 2004.
This is why the all new 2005 Ford Mustang has such big buzz right now, because it is the first all new 'Stang with a modern RWD platform in more than 25 years.

Same crap, just more of it. They should sell them by the pound or the inch. Used to be the luxury brands where built to higher standards than the cheap stuff, not any more. Economies of scale they say. Yah ever notice how the new XJ looks like a Crown Victoria? Or the Aston-Martin looks like the XK? XLR like the Corvette? Its probably why Olds died or was killed. They didn't have anything you couldn't get on a Chevy, cheaper. Did I mention Camry and GS, or 350Z and G35? How about Saabaru?Or is it Subaraab?
I had a police officer a the DMV tell me he had no interest in having a Mini because.

. Keep this on the hush-hush, but right up until I "discovered" the MINI (a full year before I ordered mine last November) I hit CarMax and looked at a WIDE selection of (shhh...) older Crown Vics (shhhh
).Colleagues and well-respected peers, I do plead "temporary insanity" on this one. My therapist assures me there are medications available if it ever happens again,
