Interesting thread ... Some Cobra guys upset
Too funny! I thought about registering, but I'll refrain. I wonder how they got wind of your vid? I shared it with a couple of guys at work, so who knows...
The Caterham guys have a field day at the track with the Snakes as they are not the best cornering machines out there.
Keep it up!

Excellent posts and vids!
I don't have a Cobra, but I have a modified eary Mustang. Listening to the debate is pretty funny. My neighbor has two Ferarris, and we were both at Big Mini Day at Thunderhill. Pretty much a put put for those that are into serious track work, but still a blast. I run a bit (more and more) with the Nor-Cal Shelby club, and they all have respect for the new computer controlled cars. There are still egoists, but there is also a long time Nor-Cal member who lives in Utah or Colorado. He signs up for track time, and just rents the fastest thing on the Hertz lot, runs it for the weekend, and takes it back wet and abused! Last run, he was in a Volvo S80! Skill was high, but the rental tires were his downfall.
Anyway, it was interesting to note the balence to the discussions. And the M3 GTR vid got my heart racing. I don't think my brain could process at the speed he was hitting! Yikes!
The Mini is easier to drive well. The higher horspower rear drivers can do better if they can use the power, and there's lots of driver skill. Taking 400 HP, coming out of a turn in second, you can't just put the pedal to the floor to hit your fastest speed.
When I got my Mustang back from some work, and had been driving my Mini for about 6 months, I hit it in second coming off a freeway on-ramp (onto the freeway). I went quite a distance sideways!
Overall, good fun, and it seems they treated you (onasled) pretty well.

Great thread over there onasled. REad all 8+pages. They seem like a great bunch of people the first few pages, then some got quite defensive. Good video you made too. Of course no one ever did ask you about that cobra you passed! Several of them just wanted to make excuses. it was very cool that some of their members with over 2000 posts defended your MINI.
Onasled, after my previous post, I realized that there was more than just one page to that thread! I just read all 9. Wow!
I don't believe anyone answered your question. FFR = Factory Five Racing
http://www.factoryfive.com
I have their brochure and DVD
. They never got back with me regarding some questions I had... Still leaning toward the Caterham anyways...

That was some great reading.
Our Mini's are legendary cars just like the original mini and the Shelby Cobra. That is what makes them both very special and appealing cars. Just like the AC Cobra our Minis are purebread beasts built to drive and built to race.
I was so very surprised at how much animosity these guys had. The guy named "pk" even said our Mini's are basically Kia's. That's hilarious!!!
I guess the moral of the thread is leave the track if you don't want your pride hurt. Stay and have fun if you wanna run your car fast and legally!!!

That's a great video! Looked like a small-block Slabside you ran down - I remember a BMW Fall Classic from a number of years ago, when a Classic Mini was harrying a 'Vette thru the turns, really pushing the limits. The Vette couldn't quite get away, even with all his HP. You have upset the Cobra boys too no end. Shame on you! HeHe!

Great post, onasled. I read all 10 pages.
Nice to see that most folks are respectful of all cars for what they are. Clearly there are a few insecure folks on all boards who feel like they need to be a d*ckhead to stupidly defend their cars, when they don't need defending. The Viagra needing attitude of only a couple of folks seems typical of any auto board, including this one.
I have immense respect for the Cobra, and hopefully will add a good replica (Superformance maybe) to the garage at some point. The real deal is far too expensive, and I'm not sure I have the stones to do a replica build up until I have "retirement like" amounts of free time.
The Kia / MINI comparison was so stupid it was hilarious. Apples and Oranges indeed.
As for all the videos... I'll say very nice driving.
The guy who flipped actually made me snort soda up my nose laughing when he said "F%^K!!!!". I thought he might narrate the roll over the way he was narrating his driving 20 seconds before. What was that car anyway? Another Mitsu?
Oh, and the Nurburgring video is one of the best things I have ever seen on the internet. I first saw that a few months ago, and still watched it the whole way through this time. Stuck pumping his fist in total radical excitement at the end is so bloody cool. He probably has logged more hours in a race car than I'll ever see in a road car, yet he still gets gassed after a lap like that.

Cobras go well in a straight line until they run into the Cd wall. I thought they would corner better than this video shows so it's probably the pilot. I get to go to the Shelby factory about once a month on business. They build a beautiful car all by hand. I just love to park my MCS in front of the main entrance.
04 MCS, EB/EB, sport pkg, Alta CAI, 15% pulley, Milltec, densos

that was great ! The pro driveer video R O C K E D !!!!
Funny thing is every driver meeting I have been in they talk about the slower drivers in fast cars holding you up in the corners and drag racing you on the srtaights.
Its always nice to run with a fun group that can give credit where due, as everyone knows the big % of a race is the driver, not to say the right car doesnt help because it really does but the driver is the bottom line.
Good work, looks like you had a ton of fun, now you have made me need another track day !

Anyway, Onasled got better treatement from the Cobra guys than we give our own sometimes! That and the Stuck video were the high points for me!
As someone who has passed much higher HP cars (and been passed by those very same cars), I know that on open track day, it's more about the driver skill than the car. Passing a Cobra is a nice feeling, and I've done it too, but that driver was SO BAD he was almost taken off the track by the stewards, and his total inability to even understand what an Apex in a turn is! They driver of the cobra was a *****. He should have let the Mini pass early on. To be fair, when I started track driving, I didn't see other cars, or my mirrors, or the corner workers holding that big blue flag with the yellow stripe! Giving the benefit of the doubt would indicate he was a newbie, but I really think he was just pissed that a good driver in a 4 banger was showing up his high $ iron! But after turn after turn, he finally got the message and got out of the way.
At my last session with the Nor-Cal Shelby club, I was all high and mighty because I'd passed a few older Mustang/Shelbys in my run group. Then they combined session later in the day, and I was humbled. A 70 Torino with a 428 was sticking on my *** THROUGH THE TURNS! Lesson for me, a really good driver in a Winabego has more skill than I'd have in an F1 Car!

On Saturday, I did the Phil Wick's Driving School at Putnam Park:
There were three Cobras in my run group -Intermediate-Advanced
I chased each and everyone of them down, stayed on their tail and passed each as they pointed me by, in one twenty minute session
. Early on, it took them awhile before they "moved aside"
Audi a4's too
My instructor, Tim, was a good sport, taught me the track and I was even faster in the afternoon
RED FURY was liking it !!!

Thanks, Onasled, for the video and link. My laptop couldn't open the video (despite all the lastest Apple software), but it sounds amazing. I wonder if I could transfer the sound to my IPod and pretend it's my car doing that?
The Cobra site is fun. Brought me back 25 years and more. Nice folks who seem to have both self confidence and perspective (at least on the first page I read--they weren't all so nice even 25 years ago). I notice one member has a very early series Cobra (even amongst 289s). I don't think the 289s were meant to be competitive for long since their chassis (what is plural for chassis--chasses?) dated from the 1950s. The 427 chassis was supposed to fix that, but their frames also flexed under power (a friend showed me how to pop open both doors under acceleration). When I raced my modified 289 I did okay against Mustangs and TransAms (it always got a cheer from Shelby folks when one of us passed a TransAm--good grief), but, even back then, we were easily picked off by good drivers (I was never better than so-so) in their modified Japanese subcompacts (especially those stealth-like Datsun 510s)--the giant killers of the time.
Things haven't changed much--the driver still counts more than the equipment.
