Q: Stock exhaust burbles gurgles more when new or when broke in

Do you think the stock exhaust burbles & gurgles more when new or after it's been driven for a while?

After 3000 miles, mine has gotten a little quieter, especially the in cabin noise just off idle.

Not sure about the mini, but from previous experiences, the exhaust noises usually get louder as the muffler packing gets loose and allows more noise to pass.

Mine seems to burble more now than before.
The emission software upgrade seemed to increase it.
Also, more burble after first starting up in the morning.

A good way to monitor burble is to fold your back seats down.

Mines the same now as when it was new new. I don't notice any change. I think some people think they get quieter but in fact they just get used to the sound. I would'nt be surprised if if got louder in a few year or so but it takes quite a while for an exhaust to change significantly.

ripley.

So far:
  • No change (ripley)
  • Quieter (kaelaria)
  • Louder (sequence, mikem53)
  • Only when software upgraded (spiderKnight)
  • sawzall (rednwhitecooper)

Closing in on 4k and at first glance I'd say quieter in the cabin... But I'm not sure it actually has gotten quieter, I think I'm just used to it and it doesn't get my attention as often.

I say that because with the windows open it still is nice and noticeable...

My '05 has had the JCW since day one, but the exhaust seems to be the same after 5200 miles as it was at the beginning.

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.
And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

Seems the same

Just passing 6200 miles and burble seems the same to me. I don't notice it as often now (rarely lift off the pedal ) but I doubt it has changed.

Well, mine is without a doubt quieter, it's not that I'm used to it. When it was brand new, I took it down to some relatives and we all went out in it. The drone in 6th around 2000 RPM was so loud in the cabin that the rear seat passengers were complaining, and it was a little hard to hear them. Shifting to 5th (about 2400 RPM) completely eliminated the drone.

There is almost no drone now at all (3000 miles).

As far as the burbling caused by the computer pulling ignition back to -40ish deg. after a sharp off-throttle, I notice no change.

Well, mines no louder, just more frequent now that I can make it do it at almost any speed. I Love that sound. It's actually worth slowing down just to hear it.

I was going to say mine is burblier now... but then I realized I only think that because summer has FINALLY come to Connecticut and I've been driving with the windows down...

Could it be MTH tinkering with timing?

Cool link - never heard of that usage!

Here's another at Dictionary.com. I had always assumed "burble" was a neologism Carroll created from "bubble" and "gurgle" - but apparently, there is a Middle English word burblen which means "to bubble!"

Getting back on topic after some "burble" etymology...

I thought my burbling (and the exhaust in general) had gotten quieter over the 8000 miles I've owned my car - but then I realized I have a Thomas Brothers map book, a Goretex jacket, a couple of sheets to use as groundcloths at the park, a floppy canvas hat, my (*ahem*) front license plate and mounting bracket, a notebook, and probably a bunch of other sound-absorbing materials all in the boot. Took 'em all out, and sure enough, there was my acoustically-tuned exhaust note, in all its glory!

Just in case it hasn't occurred to someone reading this thread, you can remove the little hidey shelf thing for more exhaust sound, or let the rear seats down for even more sound. Fun on weekends!

I was just thinking the other day that now that I'm at 10,000 miles the burbling has gotten more than it was earlier. Since I seem to be the 'elder' 05 MCS here, maybe we'll see more of this from the others after a few months, too.

4500miles and my burble seems a touch louder but somewhat less frequent. That might just be me not paying attention to it since I do precious little driving these days except to commute. I finally found some twisties out here believe it or not so Im gonna see (hear) what happens when i hit them this weekend or next.
