Let me preface this by saying that I tried doing a search for this info, and came up empty. I assume this is a pretty easy question. I had one of those union jack/checkered flag badges below the "COOPER" badge on my boot for a while, but it eventually fell off. What's the best way to remove the adhesive residue without damaging the paint? Alcohol? WD-40?

 

I just removed my Cooper Flags sunroof decal and I used WD-40. Worked like a charm, but that wass on glass too. I would assume it would be ok for the boot as well, or try Goof-Off or Goo Gone. Probably best to let it sit in the sun for a bit to soften up the adhesive and make it easier. Be sure to wash the area and throw a coat of wax on it when you are done. Hope that helps.

 

WD-40 works well

 

Be careful with Goof Off. It contains xylenes & may be unkind to your paint. WD-40 is a safe bet.

 

If you have an musical instrument shop near your house go an buy a bottle of valve oil. This works wonders for sticker residue. It cleans off easily with your normal cleaner. I cleaned the dealer sticker off my last accord and it did no damage to the paint or finish. Useing a towel that won't scratch of course. You can make your own from chemicals from your hardware store if you need alot or if you don't have a music store close. I will look up the "recipe" in my repair manuals when I get home.

 

DuPont First Klean works really well.

 

While in college I worked for an Auto Body shop, we would routinly use gasoline to remove tar, adhesive residue ect..

I used bug and tar remover....thats what a lot of the VW guys use when they debadge.it worked really well for me

 

I normally use WD-40 but mineral spirits also works and won't
harm the paint.

 

Use only approved/tested products such as 3M "adhesive, wax remover". Comes in a small tin can and found at Murray's or similar auto supply store.

 

Well, I tried WD-40, and it made absolutely no headway against the adhesive, which was surprising. Today I bought this stuff in a little yellow can called "Goof Off," and it worked like a champ! Left it on for about 5 seconds, and everything wiped away. No effect on the wax/clear coat, either.

 

I use 3M automotive ashesive remover. Made for auto paint and won't hurt clearcoat.

 

For future applications I use Goo Gone for all my applications. It takes a little more elbow grease to get the stuff off but it works well and does not harm your paint. I've used Goof Off and it took my wax and clear coat off.

I use it on all the minis I put boot stripes on. Your next best this is 3m adhesive remover. But make sure you get the stuff for cars. If you get the wrong stuff you could strip your paint.

GooGone is cheap and you can get it at any craft or hardware store.

Not at the two that I went to today, unfortunately. I tested the Goof Off first on the inside of my door frame, and it did nothing to that paint, so I went ahead with it. I used as little "elbow grease" as possible, since that's how I have messed up clear coat in the past.

 

It looks like you got lucky. I used it on a trailer and it stained the paint. so now I have to repaint it.


At least you did what you set out to do.
