Drove a 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo last week....

.... and what they say is true. AINT AS MUCH FUN AS A MINI COOPER!!!!

It was the 0-60 in 3.9 seconds one. Very very powerful car, very fast. All wheel drive, very fast on corners, but it really didnt do it for me. My Cooper S is a better **** - i mean drive, hands down.

I love my Camel.

/hugs Camel.

IMHO the only thing that comes close is the Mercedes SLK-350 convertible. It's not just about speed.

Having never driven a 911... I am curious... in what specific areas is the Mini better?

OK, I had to jump in on this one since I currently own both cars. To answer the question, it's the "FUN" factor, I believe. Although the 911 Turbo X50 on the left gives me the most adrenalin rush with its 450hp and AWD that are absent in the MINI, every time I get into my MINI, it's still FUN to drive...

Yeah, I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree with you on this one, Bob.

BTW, the MINI is much easier to drive than the 911 turbo. I noticed that the 911 sits in the garage most of the time.

I agree that the 911 turbo is better in many aspects, given its racing heritage. However, the MINI is more "FUN" to drive, mainly because it's easy to drive and maintain.

Thanks, camelpilot, for the encouraging words and objective opinion.

When a specialist consultant of mine drove away in a new black convertible Turbo Carrera I felt "somewhat" envious of that and his being younger and handsomer than me as well as his having come from a very rich family who sent him to a fabulous boarding school.

I take solace in knowing that my car is funner than his.

Yeah, I definitely agree to that. The 911 is alot harder to drive. I also agree with what dcsmd007 said about the "Fun" factor, MINI vs 911.

For me, it's very hard to explain why this is the case, I guess it's just the whole driving feeling thing. You really cannot compare the two cars, but it's like gloves.... the other one just fits better.

It may just be an opinion thing, but there are alot of 911/Cooper S owners that will agree with me.

Yeeeeeaaaaahhhhh, you're also gonna have to go ahead and come in on Sunday, too, yeah.

I drove a 93 or 95 (can't remember) 911 turbo a couple of years ago, long before I ever drove a MINI. It was rediculous, I loved it. I like the challenge of how "hard" it is to drive, and I like going close to 100mph in 3rd.

All in all, the mcs and the turbo are two totally different animals from two totally different zoos.

I appreciate the details. Interesting.

One comment: kick that SUV out of the garage and give that space to the Mini!

Let me put it this way - I've driven a late model 911, wasn't even a turbo. And if I could afford it - I would own it in a heartbeat. A Porsche (probably a 2012 Boxster, or whatever is around like it then) is my planned next car...when I can afford it

I am 100% certain that for the money, nothing touches a MINI. I dont' regret my buying it for one second. But I don't kid myself that it's some super car. Yes, it's a blast to drive. But threads like this are appearant on ALL car forums. On my last one, the Grand Prix forum, it was just as rediculous. I'm sure some people have traded all kinds of cars for a Mini for all kinds of reasons. But some of those opinions are ones I will never agree with, only laugh.

Where is the joke line drawn? Next week it'll be 'Mini is better than the Enzo...then 'Mini is better than the space shuttle'...what's next?

Sorry, but put a 911 and a Mini next to each other with a 'Take me Free' sign, and there is no question which will leave first.

I have driven a few 996 turbo's and I LOVE EM ! To date its one of my favorite cars. Quiet and subdued, actually understaed in apearance untill you hammer down. SWEET RIDE! And you can push it so hard its not funny. The only problem I have with them is they are tuned so conservitivly that you are hitting the rev limiter way way before the motor is done making power.

If I had the money there would be a 996 turbo in my garage. the mini is a more cutsy fun kind of car. Dont get me wrong I love my mini but if money wasnt the thought I would have the porsche. ( fully modded of course )

You should drive a GT3, the turbo is a bit more luxury cruiser than sports car. If you drive the GT3, you're not going to want to go back to the MINI, trust me I know from personal experience

k, firstly.... no one ever said the MINI was better than a 911.

secondly, if I was the person looking at the take me free sign, i'd take MY Camel, over any 911, any day for the rest of my life. And 100 bucks says I aint alone.

I have owned many sports cars, including the 05 MCS I got last thursday, and the only one that compars in the "FUN" area is the 86 944 NA that I had a while back. It had just the right acceleration, nothing crazy, cornered better then anything i've driven including the MCS.

I've tried boxters, 911 (993, 996), 914 and nothing comes close to the 944 feeling.

It had somehting special, just like the MINI...

As matter of fact, the MINI and the 911 are in the Garage right now because I ended up driving the SUV the most.

I've been lucky enough to get a chance to drive a newer 911 turbo and while the car is an absolute monster, the MINI has it on a couple points. 1. It's helluvalot cheaper. 2. You can drive the snot out of the MINI on city streets and be within a reasonable level of saftey and ticket avoidance. Pushing the 911 to even 1/2 of its potential will put you in jail-time territory almost instantly.

Also, while the 911 is suprisingly easy to drive at commuting speeds, I ran out of skill quickly when I got into it. I'm sure stuff would slow down as you get used to the speed, but it was kind of like trying a new driving game out for the first time at the hardest difficulty with the fastest car. If you're not real carefull (ie not having fun) you are going to be smashing the hell out of the car because you can't control it.

Defanitly an experience to have if you ever get the chance.

I just drove a 2003 996 C4S and it is a fast car but it doesn't feel as fun as the mini..........it would be nice to have the power to weight ratio as the C4S in my MCS.......but I guess it could be done with all the $$$ I would save.

Hey all. I've driven a fully "tequipt" (for non porschephiles, "tequiptment" is what they call options) 2003 996 Turbo. Its awesome. The looks, the power, the grip, truely a wonderful sports car. Some of your are right though; it does feel somewhat like a cruising car. I find the clutch feel to be quite strange. It feels to lightly sprung..effortless to press and I really think thats partially the reason why people say its hard to drive. The shifter feels pretty heavy and the steering is a tad light for that type of car. Can't really hear that engine either..probably because of its position in the rear and its muffled by the twin turbos. What truely amazes me about that car is it's power delivery and braking. NO turbo lag at all and for a 400+ hp car, its pretty mature...tamed..civilized...refined. It doesnt BLAST all that power down on the tarmac. Yet the speedo rises up so quickly and endlessly! Its so smooth. Braking, Porsches have hard feeling brakes so its easy to modulate the braking power. It feels excellent, the control is really something.

ANYWAYS: HOW DOES IT COMPARE TO THE MCS?

Our MCS is probably the most fun car out there to drive. Period I think the reason is, we can use ALL of the power. We can have the engine at 4k-5k and still not be going THAT fast. Great fun for the corners and that engine revving up there is COOOL. You can do this anywhere! (Except school grounds, watch out for children hahaha ) The Turbo, you can't use that kind of power at all, really. That engine is pretty much IDLING when going around corners at the same speed as the MCS. NO FUN! Not just that, all the gears pull like the last one. In the MSC, you gotta work the tranny to keep the revs in the best range! Thats FUN right there! Also, i think the Mini is more eyecatching

just call me Clarkson of TopGear . i was the stig for both cars

cheers!

Ive driven my friend's Porsche (granted, it wasnt a brand new turbo, but it was a porsche none the less) and i would take a mini over it anyday. The mini is a better day to day car. I have no clue how he comutes 45 minutes to school every day in his Porsche

I've driven only one car that's more FUN than my MINI: a 360 Modena. It was mine for two days, and I still have (wet) dreams about it...the best 48 hours of my life
I tink an Elise might also be the only other car with (slightly) more fun.

However, for the price, nothing can even touch the MINI

I think for me early-apex has nailed it. The mini is an inexpensive way to enjoy motoring at a relatively high level but not at speeds and power that can overwhelm (save Hubie and El). I have two in college and child support for another. I can modify and beat my Mini for relatively small $. Add up my mods on a Posche and decide if you would rather have anothe house (in GA.). The car is easy to drive, has a nice sound etc, etc. Kind of like driving formula Ford thinking your an F1 driver. I used to fly small planes and as the speed goes up, decision time shrinks and the cost of bending metal and breaking body parts.........well, you get it.
