Edge Racing Mess Up?

OK... tell me if you think i'm over reacting.

I ordered wheels and tires from Edge Racing about a month ago. When they arrived the weights from balancing fell off. So I called and they told me to get them balanced here and send them the bill. I had a local shop get the wheels balanced for me. When the car was there I had an oil change so I asked them to put the wheels on. So they were putting on the last wheel and one of the lugs, supplied by Edge Racing, snapped in half . This created about a half an hour of labor $ and frustration. So when I called to ask them to reimburse me for the 1/2 hour labor that the crappy lug they supplied me caused they said NO.

I don't know what to do but i'm angry. I probably would not be complaining about this if I got the wheels with no problem but two issues with this purchase just makes my experience with Edge Racing a bad one.

Of course these lugs should not snap even if they were stressed beyond the specified torque setting, but were they tightening it by hand with a torque wrench to proper specifications or were they using using an air powered impact wrench that could have applied too much torque to the lugs?

Good question... they were tightened with a torque wrench then hand tightened. I still can't beleive it snapped.

They definitely should not snap if tightened by hand. I asked because I once had a lug broken by a shop that used a super strong impact wrench to over tighten a lug.

Hope the 1/2 hour labor charge was not too much. . . sometimes we just have to eat it, but it is at least a good thing that these crummy lugs were discovered before something happened on the road and you had to post this message from a hospital bed.

I'd suggest buying a complete new set of lugs. . . . even if Edge would replace the broken one, I would not trust it. . .

I'm sorry but something just doesn't sound right to me. Regardless of what happened Edge cannot hold responsibility of what happened in that shop. Why that shop would charge you an extra half hour of labor for something THEY did wrong is beyond me but no way can you pass that mistake on to someone who just provided the product (unless you can prove that there is an internal flaw with the lug) Which brings me to my second point. I'm not saying that you don't know what happened but I DO know that out of many tire shops the ones that actually take the time to look up the lug torque for a specific vehicle and use a torque wrench are few and far between.. I am pretty certain that they used and air impact wrench which ALWAYS overtorques. And if they did do it by hand then they would have to have the torque setting WAY off.....or didn't give a damn about where the setting was on the wrench. SO no matter how you look at it it was the shops fault entirely.

I wouldn't be so quick to say the shop was at fault.

It's entirely possible that the lug bolt was faulty. Yes, they probably had an impact wrench on it, but a new bolt still shouldn't have failed. If it was, in-fact, the bolt's fault then how can you hold the shop responsible?

Honestly, I throw away all hardware sent to me with wheels because I would expect most of these places to send out the cheapest thing they can get their hands on. In the same situation, I would be a little upset I guess. In all honestly, I wouldn't have called them about the wheel weight in the first place. They gave you one "gift". Asking for a second was a little optimistic.

If I were working the phone, I'd have labelled you a whiner and done the same thing. Then again, that's why I stay away from customer service jobs

Sorry to hear it Rich. I know how much you were looking forward to getting those rims on. It seems like Edge would be responsible for any sort of product defects, if it is their fault, and it seems like it is. Otherwise maybe the garage is responsible?

These are all good opinions and comments. Thats why I posted this issue here.

I was there watching him put the wheels on the car and they did not use an impact wrench. I also would not say that I am whinning (though I understand what you are saying) but just a customer who wants to be happy with the product sold. I am a strong believer in good customer service which I partially recieved. I was explained everything very well by Edge Racing. The thing that upset me most about my experience was that I had not only one thing wrong with my purchase but two. I expect none. Tough love.

The wheels are on the car though and they look damn good. On the bright side, I did get a great price for the wheels and tires.

Rich-

Where did you find the rims on the site? I've been looking and can't come up with them.
