Great idea to start a new thread. I will get with Melindalou and let you know where off I-40 to meet up in Hickory on 5/5.

I wouldn't mind meeting there either. I'm way up in north raleigh so it doesn't make sense to drive to Apex. If all else fails, I'll just sit on a 40 on-ramp and pick the caravan up as you roll by. No sense adding too many stops.

I can do that... I usually come up 421 from Siler City to go west, but I can come up 751 to get I-40 West.

I just figured out the color thing in the first post... yeah I'm a little slow, when I'm not in a MINI.

Very clever Chris.

OK you Asheville/western NC guys (and you know who you are). Time to pick a location to meet on 5/5. We're getting anxious now that the Dragon is less than a month away and might start behaving irrationally .

19 days and no Asheville meet up point! Anybody that knows Asheville could chime in here and suggest a meet up point.

I can suggest 2 or 3 places..

Biltmore Square Mall, at old exit 2 off of I-26 (first exit south of I-40).

The farmer's market, same exit, opposite direction from the mall for those coming up I-26, and 1 exit before I-26 off of I-40..

The first exit after I-26 on I-40, there's a bunch of fast food places there you can meet at..

Cinco De Mayo in Asheville

Might I suggest a Mexican restaurant for our lunch stop to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

At exit 44 which is the first exit west of I-26 there is a Cracker Barrel. I'm not suggesting we eat because I know some folks want to grab something fast. We can meet there and decide where to eat. It is easy to find and easy to get back on I-40 to head west. Just a thought!

There may even be a Taco Bell close by for M3Tigger!

Cracker Barrel @ 12:30?

Thanks MoonPie. Sounds like a good place to meet up, don't have to eat there though. Once we have everybody together, we can grab a bite to eat.

I'm Ok with rendevouing at the Cracker Barrel at exit 44 and then deciding what to do from there. Sounds like a plan to me.

If someone gets there early ride a little north and south of 40 on Patton Ave and see what is available and bring us the options. There used to be a Popeye's, a McDonald's near the exit and a Subway south of 40 in a shopping center.

Having just driven the I-40 route to western NC today... I'd like propose a slight change in route. We picked up the Blue Ridge Parkway near where it crosses I-40 or I-26. We traveled it from near the I-40 crossing to US28/74 near Sylva. It may have added 30-45 minutes to the trip, but it was a nice winding drive. A great relief from I-40 and Asheville traffic.

If we are meeting around 12:30 there should still be plenty of time to get to Fontana

It should take less than an hour to Fontana from where BRP crosses 28/75 @ Sylva
Anyway... think about it. We can make the decision when we meet and see how are time is doing.

I approve.

Oops, I thought we were voting on something again!

I think we should take the BRP.

This should be a nice warm up for the Dragon. This is the way Mellotron and I came back last year. Seeing fog/clouds blowing up and over the Parkway was weird but pretty when you could see much of anything at all. Going this route will add some time to the trip tho.

If the weather is bad and rainy I recommend staying on the interstate. It can be a bummer to ride on the BRP in the clouds. I have been up there when you couldn't see 20 ft in front of you. But if the it is a pretty day I'm all for it.
Now we will have to change the meet location. I recommend we meet on US 25 which is Hendersonville Rd. at the Chick-fil-a which is just south of the access to the BRP. Those taking I-40 will take exit 50 and go south. Those traveling I-26 need to take exit 13 and go north, at some point 25 splits and becomes 25-A. So make sure you follow 25 or Hendersonville Rd.
Just a thought if any one knows a better place to meet I'm all for it.

Whatever the group decides is OK with me. I'll just follow the MINI in front of me!
