Need reconmendation for exposed hub

Hello everybody

Another question for you mechanical types.
I have SSR Comp R with no option for wheel caps. So my hubs are all exposed. I already have a bit of rust on them and need rub them out soon.

Can anybody reconmend a product I can use to coat or paint on the hub to protect it from the elements? I'm hoping there is something I can pick up at the local auto shop.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Daniel in San Jose, Ca

Sand off the rust, paint the hub w/ a good shot of black paint and then use anti-seize where the wheel contacts the hub. This will keep most of the rust away. Permatex has a good anti-seize and it has a brush applicator to make it easy to slather on.

bdmini - thanks for the information.

I'll be going to the autostore this weekend. Permatex seems to be a great solution.

What about painting the hubs? Would it be smart to use a spray paint?

Thanks anyways,

Daniel

MISFITOY used a cool metal color made by rustoleum.

Im using matt-black engine enamel paint.
I just sanded the hub's rust using 200 and 400 grit and then
masked the rotor so that I would only paint the exposed hub.

looks great. Im using Comps too.

I've got the same wheels and went with a high temp silver metallic, very close the the anthracite. Probably didn't need to go high temp but I wondered about the brakes heating up.

An interesting side note. I found the gold (anodizing?) on the the lug bolts wiped right off after 2 minutes or so in vinegar. I'm still going to go with chromed lugs but in the meantime they look better than the stock.

Thanks again everybody. Hopefully the weather will allow me to do it this weekend.

Just so you know kenchan -- it was your mini that inspired me to pick up the SSRs. At signal lights people don't even look at the mini they just look at the wheels.

I'm running the 16 x 6.5 on Fuzions 205/50's. -- I knew i wanted some 16's, but the question was weather to get 45's or 50's. But then after checking out your web page I knew the answer was 50. Given the larger side wall my ride is so much smoother. And with higher performance tires - ive been hitting the corners much harder. It was a no compromise package. But I have added 3mm spacers just to have the wheels a bit more flush with the arches.

I definitely have to thank JCampos for popping in the H-Sports and sway bar too!!

I don't understand the no option for wheel caps?? You are talking about the center caps right?? The little round ones that go in the center of the wheel and say SSR on them? What option do you want? What is wrong with the stock ones? I could e-mail you a photo of mine but can't figure out how to put it here.

My SSR Comps are 17"

The Comp R wheel has a shallow center hole. The center cap will come into contact with the spindle before becoming fully seated.

Horribly Confused by this whole "R" business

Is there a difference between different SSR Comp-types? Are there, indeed, multiple variations of the SSR Comp? I'm running 16x7s, and I called Alex@tirerack for center caps. They came, fit perfectly, and hide the wheel hub. Everybody who sees them calls them Comp R's, but I have had no problems with the center caps.

My comp R's as I understand were the first production run put out by SSR and TireRack with a hubcentric center that do not require those additional rings. I don't know about now, but initially they were never designed for the 'center caps'. I called Alex and he said that for my wheels they are not an option. Maybe the latter produced allow them. Hope that clears things up.

Cheers

Daniel

Naw, don't use center caps on these sport wheels. it's part of the
dressup, no center cap = cool.

I sold my center caps that came with my Comps because someone
wanted them so badly. I don't know why.

Those center caps looks like Staple's EASY button...

I agree; I don't like them, but I like them more than the alternative. What would kick ***, though, would be to fit some MINI logos either on the center caps or into their fittings.

I can't stand having 3rd party logos or lettering on my car, and would completely eliminate them if there were an attractive option.

I agree, I like the tough look without the caps. The SSR Comp R is the 16x6.5 wheel. According to Alex - tirerack, this wheel was never intended nor machined for center caps. Here is a thread he directed me to when I asked about the caps.

Edit: OK think the link works now
