Illinois has front & rear plates as does Missouri. Some of us in Mo tend to run without a front but Car Club friends in Illinois say they are much stricter at enforcing it. Living in St Louis we tend to be across the River in Illinois a lot but I've never been stopped.

i've been running around the chicagoland area without a front plate for 4 years now. my vw and my mini never had a front plate and i got rooled only once. the cop asked me where my plate was i i told him in my trunk because it fell off. he told me to fix it and that was that. never been harassed again. but it is up to you if you want ot risk it or not. i personal don't care enough for half of il road laws, so no front plate for me.
later

Yes IL does require a front plate and I have been without for 2yrs now with no problems. My story is I bought my MINI in IN (which doesn't require a front plate), so there is no place to mount a front plate.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'm foxed. I will be moving to the MO/IL area (near Quincy, IL), and was deciding which state to live in based on their licence plate laws So I guess it doesn't matter which side of the river I live.

You will be considerably closer to St. Louis than Chicago living in Quincy. You may want to consider joining our MINI Club. We head up towards Quincy on many of our runs. There's a lot more hills & twisties in Missouri. Illinois is about as flat as a pancake

Besides the front plate issue, you can't have any tint on the front windows either. You can paint over the rear windows if you want though

In Missouri you can have limo tint on rear side windows & boot window. You can do 35%(blocks out 65%) on front side windows. One more reason to live on our side of the Mighty Miss

well, with the window tint thing, in il you can't have tint on the front windows, however, there is a loop hole. if you have tint on those front windows (which state law says is illegal), you can have only 35% or lighter. kinda wierd that there is a loop hole but hey, it is il. they are funky here.

Actually my new job is in MO ( about 40 min away from Quincy), but we had considered living in Quincy because it is a bigger town.
edit: Any thoughts regarding the advantages to living in MO as opposed to IL (other than the twisties)?

I think our State taxes are lower than Illinois. As far as housing, I would think houses would be priced similar in that area of MO & IL. We have more Wineries Hannibal is a nice town. Quaint but it has a lot of new housing. Mark Twain Lake is nearby. It's cheaper to license a car in MO. You can root for the Cardinals You're a little bit closer to the MINI dealer. Whatever your choice, may I be the first to welcome you to the heart of the Midwest

My excuse is that I bought the car in Wisconsin, where they don't require front plates, and the dealer never installed the license plate holder. So I can't even put on a front plate if I wanted too!

Wow! When did WI change the law? I was born and raised there and they did rerquire. I'm in IL now and no front plate. I do carry it in the trunk with the holder just in case I get stopped.

Have you ever been stopped / ticketed for this?

As far as I know Wisconsin does require front plates. You just don't need an up to date MM/YY sticker on front. On the other hand WI DOT computers have been down since December when I picked up my MINI. Still don't have plates.

Since I don't have the plates yet I also have a question. A black plastic frame (obviously Lic. plate size) was in my boot on delivery. Is this for the front plate? It's like an inch thick for cripes sake and doesn't appear as if it will fit (as least not tastefully) - I think I'll go without until caught!

You could be right (A wise man named Seymour once said "people make mistakes, that's why pencils have erasers"). But in recent years I don't recall seeing front plates on the cars from behind the cheddar curtain. And I see plenty of them as I live so close to the border that I can hear it when they cut the cheese . Anyways, International MINI in Milwaukee had no problem with my "request" not to install the front plate holder. Perhaps some of our MINI friends from the great north can weigh in on this and help out.

3/5 of our family's cars have no front plates, and so far no stops. You just JINXED me , so I KNOW that tommorrow I'll probably (make that WILL) get stopped. Thanks.

Hey, no complaints about International MINI. They were very cool and sold me what Knauz closer to home (like 2 miles away!) wouldn't back in May 2003 when they first came out, a JCW kit! So, they got the order. In fact, the JCW kit arrived BEFORE the car!

And congrats! on that game tonight. Go Bo!

I love Bo Ryan - he can flat out coach. The Badgers are taking a lot of heat for their style of play but its a lot better than a few years ago under Bennett. With Bo they can shoot when open not just when the shot clock winds down! And Illinois Rocks! The Big Ten Rocks!

Edit: Bruce Weber Rocks. He not only can coach he seems like a genuine nice guy!
