Handsfree in Convertible?

Has anyone tried out a handsfree bluetooth kit in a convertible? Was there too much wind noise for the other end to hear you? I have a nokia ck-1 bt kit I pulled out of my previous car, and wonder if it's worth installing. I have a bt headset that works, but isn't as convenient.

If you have put a handsfree kit in the convertible, where did you mount the microphone?

What's the make and model of your handsfree kit? I only ask because it depends whether or not it will work in the convertable....

It's a nokia ck-1. I don't see why it should matter though. If I wouldn't be able to use it with the head unit, I could alwasy just use the speaker that comes with it. It only really needs 3 connections to the car - 12v, ground, and ignition sense. The radio input is optional, but definitely desired.

You can link it to the radio

On the ones I have done I have mounted the mike on the factory mike grille by the interior light

Cool. So that's what that grill is. Have you tried to get an aftermarket mike in there? is there a mike in there that I could wire to? Is the stereo mute the right sense, or does it have to be inverted for the nokia as it does for a siemens one in the faq?

Thanks!

Not sure about yours either. Also, I'm sorry that I didn't read your initial post, you stated your information, and I had a brain fart....

I would "mock" it up first to see if the microphone worked well with the top down. The newer hands free kits have "noise reduction" but I'm not sure they can handle the top down. I know my handsfree hates the sunroof open on my car, but that may be the old age and poor quality of the unit itself (sonyericsson).

Good Luck!

I'd be concerned that with the top down there would be too much noise...

Let me check something with Mike, I might be able to help you with the connections...

That's a good idea. I could just rig it with a lighter plug pretty quickly, and test it out. It isn't the latest model, but sounded fine in a minivan. It may not be the best for this application.

The headset I got claims to be windproof. The temperature hasn't gotten much above freezing since I've had the car, so I haven't had the chance to test that out either.

Don't bother....

I've had convertable for almost 20 years. No mike I've ever used has worked out, so I just gave up. Here's what your up against:

1) Wind noise and high background levels. This makes it harder for any voice command to work.

2) Turbulent flow over the mike. This is what makes the most noise. Even though it's not much absolute noise, the wind going over the slots or the foam on the mike is right in front of the pickup. This is the real killer.

Sad truth, but the topless experiance is well worth it.

Has anyone tried the Logitech Bt headset? It's supposed to be windproof.

I tried one of the Aliph Jawbone units, but wasn't satisfied. The jawbone pickup was still distorting.

I have the logitech headset, and like it a lot. I paid $40 at buy.com.

I have my work line forwarded to my cell. The old lady called the other day, and though I was still in the office, when I was on my way home. I was in the mini, but the top was up. It's still friggin cold here in DC. It has a foamy looking part over the mic, kind of like what you see the newpeople on tv with. I would guess this would screen out the wind a bit.

Guess I'll pick one up and give it a try. Its warm enough down here to take the top down.

I also have high hopes for adapting the upcoming Motorola HS830. They are going to be selling it in a Motorcycle Helmet package. If it will work on a motorcycle then surely it will work in a convertible.

The question is... Do you really want to go driving around town in your convertible with a helmet on?

Mikey - How does it work with the top down?

And what are those things that look like vents for? Where you placed the mic on top of on the right side?

Wasn't mine so I didn't try it on the road, but no complaints from the customer
The grilles are for the factory mike but I find you lose sensitivity if you put the nokia mike in there

ok, I got a chance to test the logitech bt with the top down yesterday. I left myself a voicemail. There was a lot of background noise. I'm not sure I could say it was wind noise though, but it was very noisy. This was while driving around 70 mph on the DC beltway.

It was 69 degrees yesterday, and 25 and snowing today!
