Dealer Added Driving lamps - 100W?

Wondered if anyone has replaced the stock 55w bulbs in the dealer added driving lamps with something like a 100w? Any heat issues?

You might burn out the harness. You might want to consider the 55w but
has the 100w look (like the PIAA's, etc).

The relay might not be able to handle the double load for one (it's not a conventional relay with contacts, rather it's a transistor switch much the same as what controls the headlights, taillights, etc on the MINI), plus there have been mentions about the added heat causing the lenses to crack. This makes sense being that the lamp housings are quite small. 100 watt bulbs are typically used in the large, 6 inch offroad lights.

Hmm, 100w may be too much from what it sounds like...maybe the 85w bulbs would be safer.

I'd add an relay to the circuit and allow the OEM relay/transistor to control the coil on the new relay. Don't forget to add a fuse to the power lead.

I would suggest using larger wiring too.

Its how most kids burn out their factory harnesses on their Nissans and
Hondas while using a hotter bulb on their car. It'll be okay for a few
weeks or a few months, but slowly the terminals around the housing
start to melt, then the plug deforms, etc. but might be okay on the
MINI's not sure. but I would not just 'test it out' on my car.

but then again I guess you don't use the driving lights all the time, so
you might be okay.

Lighting upgrades

If you are interested in doing any lighting upgrades to you vehicle go to this site http://www.danielsternlighting.com/ for excellent advice and products. I needed information regarding my upgrade of the high beams on my '05 MCS. I have the Xenon low beams and needed more "output" from my highs. Daniel Stern suggested the Osram 65w H7. Believe me it was a hugh improvement His web site also discusses the aiming of headlight beams to avoid blinding oncoming cars and many other improvement in lighting. BTW the OEM high beams are 55w at 1350 lumens, the Osrams are 2100 lumens.

I sent him an e-mail last weekend basically asking if the 65w H7's are OK in the OEM highbeams with the original factory wiring. He hasn't sent me an answer yet.

Did you add any relays? Any problems from this mod?

Let there be light!

Rawhyde, I did not add any relays. The replacement bulb works fine, and there is a GREAT deal of additional light provided. I don't think I'll have any problems and I'm sure you will not either. If you want to call and speak to him directly, his number is 416-766-2327. Tell him I sent you. He used to live in Colorado.

I called up Mr Stern and ordered some of the 65W H7 bulbs for the high beams, and I found out about another cool item he has!

Halogen back-up bulbs. They are 35W so they won't require relays. Just plug in and enjoy.

I ordered a set for my Impala SS as well.

You just can't have too much light...

Rawhyde, I'm glad Daniel was able to help you. He suggested the upgraded bulbs for the backup lights but then I reminded him I have a '05 and that the backup lights are part of the whole light assembly. You must have a eariler model to be able to use the new bulb, and yes, you are right, you can't have too much light. Did you look at his web site for the other neat stuff he has? F

Is there any way to wire the rally lights independantly of the high beams? I would just like to have the switch turn them on or off regardless of whether the other lights are on or not.

I have an 05 on order. He said they'd work just fine. I also got a set for my Impala SS.
