Latest news

Here is a link with a good map of tomorrow's HRP Support Rally :
http://forumshawaii.net/phpBB2/viewt...aa1363263ea0f5

I hope we have a good showing and it sounds like most car clubs will be represented.

Anyone have white shoe polish (or the good stuff that bgrpph has)? They want us to mark our side windows with "HRP".

Thanks for the support!

Wow, what a turnout today. So many different forms of vehicles showed-up to show their support for a new track. Our NAM MINI turnout unfortunately was well, sort of mini.

minihune, drea-min, eastsidemini, bgrpph and dakinemini met at the designated parking lot to group together before the rally.

We did a few laps around the capital building on the designated course and pulled in to park and take-in the hundreds of other vehicles that showed up to support. We ended-up parking near an Xb group and the Miata folks parked next to us too.

(The first photo was taken by Cory T. of the Miata club)

We also saw Jason Y.(name edited) at the rally and erik808 left his little vacation early to get a few laps around the cap bldg. as the MINIs were leaving. Once again, thanks to all that supported this event.

Thanks for the pictures.

Looks like we have the "whole" lawn to ourselves but we were some of the early birds. Over the next hour 100s of cars parked all around us.

We made it around the capitol from 12 noon to about 1230pm until the traffic started to snarl and grate on my nerves. Wanting to avoid a parking lot in idle I followed the cars in front of me and found our way to the lawn area.

We had "Quality, Not Quantity"

Yes, I failed to mention that. That whole lawn was packed with cars by the time we were getting ready to leave.

minihune, thanks for the name edit on my earlier post.

Nice images, THANKS! My MCS was parked not far from where you folks were in HMB. I REALLLY like covered parking.

When things get rollig with the club again the offer to use HMB for our meetings should still be vaible.

Aloha!

Sorry you didn't make it back for the rally.
We did spy your JCW MCS at HMB parking lot.
I knew you were away at another event.

We made it around the capitol at least four times before the traffic became too congested. By then there were more and more people driving around so our detour to park was actually a very good thing. Plus I had never parked on the capitol grounds before.
Just got to watch out for those bumpy tree roots.

I saw that, and I'm sorry that we didn't make it out there. My neighbor needed a sitter because she had to work and there was no school. I ahve to say that he has a point. Did you all see the editorial the next day, condeming this? I'll see if I can find it. It was in the advertiser.

Editorial? Yes.
Condeming this? No. (I did check the letters to the editor for several days)

"Raceway tax credit? Give us a break"
Quote:
The case has yet to be made that shows compelling reasons for the raceway tax credit. Does the public benefit outweigh the costs? Does it help diversify Hawai'i's economy in a positive way? And what's to stop other businesses from asking for and receiving similar perks?

-----------
These are valid questions. The article points out that historically, tax credit is given certain types of businesses (film industry) in an effort to boost the economy. This arguement has already been made, a world class motorsports track would attract high visibility national or international driving events to Hawaii multiple times per year. If the convention center or surfing meets can draw events to Hawaii then a new raceway park could as well.

Does this diversify our economy? Sure, it's adding partly to tourism, partly to sports both spectators and participants, partly to the construction industry, and partly to making use of land that is not otherwise being used to generate income for businesses or the government.

What's to stop other businesses from asking for tax credit?
Nothing, except to make enough of an arguement that the benefit would be positive and real. Our economy is a delicate thing, our government in a position to lend businesses a helping hand when the investment is so great.
Otherwise nothing gets done. We all suffer.

What is the alternative? No venue for motorsports. Nada.
Seems like this is a no brainer. We have all these people with interest in motorsports and no place to go. From being involved with Sport car club of America events for the last year I can say that I am confident that those who know motorsports will act appropriately and responsibly. But our young people and those less experienced have no facility/outlet for developing their skills and interest in motorsports if there is no Hawaii raceway park.

The rally at the capitol just shows the level of interest there is in Hawaii for all forms of motorsports. It's pretty diverse. While waiting by my car I saw many of those in SCCA that I see regularly at HRP but I saw many others from other groups- the go karters, the motorcyclists, the dragsters, the drifters, the sports car enthusiasts from various dealerships, and lots of families. Motorsports can be a family affair with generations that participate, drive, do car maintenance, and work behind the scenes on getting events done. We may live on a small island but I am always impressed with the level of dedication I see in others for this sport.

I read it and I agree that there are still some questions to be answered, but this editorial lent a negative connotation to the whole idea.

Another venue for this Legislative session would have been to try and float special purpose revenue bonds.
