Hi all, I just bought an R53 (12/2003, 2004 MY) and it came with a supercharger with the spare parts. It doesn't look obviously broken but it was in theory from 12/2003 so it's not the teflon one, and the previous owner obviously removed and replaced it for a reason.
Can I give this to someone who rebuilds them or is it OK to just toss? I don't think they're making any new ones. I don't want this lump just sitting around taking up space.
I'm located in NYC, I imagine this heavy thing will be a pain to ship unless it somehow fits in a USPS flat rate package.
Thanks!
I would definitely hang onto it as a core. Stiegemeier Porting seems to be the only shop turning out good rebuilds in the US currently. You can tell if yours is a teflon coated one if it has black rotors instead of grey, and judge wear based on how badly worn the rotor coating is.
Please don't just toss it. At least sell it cheap as an unknown condition. Someone will pick it up.
For all you know it could be someone swapped it just to have a smaller pulley and it's still in perfect condition. It would be a shame just to toss it..
Definitely list it in the NAM Marketplace for a reasonable "unknown condition" price + shipping rather than tossing it out assuming it's junk/just taking up space.
You have nothing to loose but someone else's gain.
Good luck!
BTW: If you are not too interested in researching what to look for in a used Supercharger with respect to condition - A salvage yard / U- Pull It Supercharger from an R53 of unknown condition usually goes for $70 + tax & fees (about $90 cash & carry).
Hope it helps.
Thanks. My spare is the non-teflon coated one. It looks like some of the surface coating has chipped away shown below and the edges have scuff marks but the metal isn't deformed. Turns easily. I just live in NYC and it's annoying to store a 20 pound lump of metal when I live in a 600 square foot apartment. Maybe I'll sell it.

I totally get it...
Before I moved out west, I'd spent 12 years in the southeast collecting excellent condition 1st Gen hard to find/NA OEM parts from salvage yards. I must have amassed at least $3,000 + in parts that lined a 11'L×4'Wx4'H wall in my 700sqft Atlanta,Ga apartment.
When I unprecedently decided to move one day; with no interest or time to try and sell my collection of parts - I loaded up and dropped it all off at a Goodwill store in Canton, Ga...(it took 4 trips).
I often wonder/imagine a Mini owner walking into that Goodwill and being stunned to find a wall of Mini parts at that store...
I wish I had you-pull it yards near here. I just saw a JCW with FMIC and Kosei K1s on Car-Part.com located in Philadelphia. Basically 50% of R53s have aftermarket go-fast parts that the junkyards won't really have any idea about.
