Transfer Case Options

Well, the transfer case in my 2013 R60 JCW is making noise. Looking at replacements, we have new Mini TC at $3500+ and new TC off eBay and other stores for $700. The price disparity is huge there.

Been looking for low mileage used units as well. Is there a good "go to" for reliable rebuilds? Not sure on the cheaper likely China TC options, but I'm open to opinions.

Thanks

Just wanted to see if anyone can offer some additional context.

My 2013 JCW has a transfer case with the part number 2710-9811688

I called Mini and they are saying the part number to order is 2710-9811708. Looking online, it shows the TC ending in 708 is for 2010-2016 S models only

I'm unable to find any documents stating if there is a difference between 688 and 708 since I can't imagine why they would have different internals. Any ideas?

Thanks

We dont carry any rebuilds at this point. Maybe in the future.

Thank you for clarifying, it seems everyone states the 708 TC is for autos. Very confusing that they could get that wrong, but it least it's sorted now

I'll keep looking for the 688 TC case since that is what mine calls for, but I'm still trying to figure out if there is a difference in the TC fitted to JCW vs S models. I can't imagine much difference, but who knows.

Thanks

Do you have an automatic or manual transmission? The -688 transfer case is for automatic transmission, and the -708 is for the manual.

Hello, I do have an auto. My confusion lied in the fact that while looking I kept seeing 708 listed for autos so I thought that was an option until ECS provided the correction above.

I also see other TC part numbers noted for S models so I was also trying to figure how what made the JCW TC different, if it is indeed different.

S or JCW doesn't matter.

OK, so S models use the 688 TC as well? If so, that will make the search much easier. Thanks!

Just to update, I was able to find a good used TC for my R60 auto. It's in transit now so I should have it by the end of the week.

I purchased new seals and O-rings since I'll have the main shaft out to install, might as well avoid a potential issue. Also ordered a liter of the gear oil so I'll pick that up at the dealer on Friday.

I've watched a few videos on YouTube so I have a general idea what to do, but if anyone has any other links I could look at please send them my way.

Thanks!
