R60 The ole oil housing gasket job
The ole oil housing gasket job
Regarding the oil filter housing gasket that is prone to failing and causing leaks. I've had a very slight leak from what i believe is this area for about a year, but we don't drive this car much (daughters car, she is away overseas to Uni.) I do drive the car 1-2 times a week, short trips, seems like its not leaking anymore-but I know it didn't 'cure' itself. The car doesnt burn oil, so outside of it getting really bad and leaking a lot and having to top off oil-what harm is it waiting and waiting to do it?
I'd rather wait till the fall when things calm down and I can leave it on jacks over a weekend in the garage!
Thanks

Assuming the leak doesn't get any worse, I think you can postpone it without worry. Obviously, checking oil level as appropriate.
Eventually, if it leaks bad enough, I imagine two concerns. 1 is low oil, and I'm sure you can stay on top of that. 2 is possible fire from the oil dripping on to the exhaust manifold (this is probably unlikely).
Oh, also, you have both oil and coolant flowing through different chambers, with gaskets preventing cross-contamination. If these gaskets are starting to fail, it's possible to get coolant in the oil. I imagine this unlikely, but journal/rod bearings REALLY don't like coolant mixed with the oil. So maybe keep an eye on milky looking substance on the dipstick when checking oil, or coolant disappearing.
