I am starting a new thread. I have a 2010 Mini Base with a rebuilt motor. Had a lot of issues but I believe I have all of that working right... I hope.
What I am fighting with: If the motor is cold, not started for 5 hours, it will start, needs a little throttle help to keep it running for the first 20 to 30 seconds. Then it will idle at 1100, warm up and drop to the normal 800 to 1000 RPMs. It will run for at least 5 minutes (as long as I tested). If I turn it off I can't get it to restart. NO CODES. From a cold start if I turn it off in the first minute, I can restart it will throttle help (more than before) and it will run. Let the motor warm up, and it will not start.
I smell gas, good voltage, timing has been checked, I don't get it.
I got back to the Mini. Wow! did I screw up putting the head back together. Been looking at this thinking bad ECU, no spark, plugged fuel filter, all sorts of things!! It was just me.
I am posting this to help others. I changed the Cam seals that allow the VANOS solenoid to port oil to the cam gears I screwed up. To change the seals, the cam has to come out. To pull the cam, you have to unbolt the springs for the inteIntermediate lever. https://www.oemproparts.ca/v-2010-mi...e--valve-train
I didn't get the springs for the Intermediate lever the right spot. The tip of the spring ended up inside the inteIntermediate lever and not on the back side of the rocker.
What the engine will do:
Hard start, if does light off it will not have power, if you give it gas, it will not accelerate. In most cases it will not kick over. More likely to start if cold. I found the problem by looking under the cam and seeing shinny parts on the spring. That shinny needs to sit in the grove in the inteIntermediate lever.
I also found an easier way of putting these together. Don't try to get the spring in the right spot. Pull them wide so they bypass the whole thing. Focus on getting the bolt the holds the spring in straight! This is really important as stripping this bolt happens too easy!! After the bolt is in use a large flat tip to push it down and it to the right spot. I cut a "V" into the tip of an old one and it worked great.
