Removing internals from the 6 speed tranny

Hey folks, I am currently taking apart the 6 speed manual to check the synchro's. How does one remove the gear stacks? I got the cover off, i cant get the shaft that holds the dog legs out through. Do i need it out to remove the gearsets?.

If the 6 speed Getrag has a similar construction as the 5 speed then yes, you can only get them out by pressing out the shafts. I believe the 6 speed has three instead of two shafts.

I documented rebuilding the 5 speed Getrag step by step in this thread.

I think I might be in a bit of doo doo. The back of the gear trees has snap rings with no holes or good way to remove them. I also cant get the rod out that holds the dog legs.

You need a snap ring plier for that like this one. The snap ring are probably loaded so it helps to tap the shafts lightly to unload them.

As for the rod, I don't know. Pictures could help.

That would not work, there are no holes in the snap ring or anything like that to grab them

Just to be sure, you are seeing a ring like this?

Snap ring (have no ears)

And not this?

Circlip (which have ears)

Are the shafts held in like this? (Snap ring on the inside, circlip on the outside)

Posting a picture would really help

Hmm to be honest I have no idea how to get those of within that space. You somehow need to make room for the snap rings to get out of their groove.

Is there any chance that backside (the shiny flat part with the bolt holes) is actually a plate sealed to the gearbox?

Looking at it again, are that very large allan bolts at the end of each shaft? Maybe undo those to get access to the shafts so you can press them out while the bearings stay in position. Than after you can press the bearings from the inside out?
Just a thought

Those rings look like you will have to press the shafts a bit, then you take the rings off, then you slide it all forward. I think.

Or as mentioned, those hex heads may be bolts that retain the shafts to the bearings.
