I am replacing the head gasket in my 2010 JCW (N14B16C). I am wondering if the car needs to be in front-end-service mode to do this job. Obviously the intake and exhaust manifold need to be removed from the head to get the head off but does the entire front end need to come off?
Also - Does the gasket at the exhaust manifold need to be replaced?
When I did my head gasket, I did remove the front bumper, headlight assembly, grille, radiator and set aside the condenser to have much easier access. Oh and as far as the exhaust gasket is concerned, it’s a good idea to replace the exhaust gasket while you’re in there. Also, it’s a good idea to also replace the auxiliary water pump and the oil return line on your turbo.

Get some new head bolts as well those are torque to yield bolts.........
when i did the oil cooler seals i just put the front end in service mode. but, i’ve take the exhaust heat shield off to put on a turbo blanket and recently swapped the down pipe without doing that. so its possible, but a pita. i relied on a 10mm ujoint socket and a long quarter inch extension. a wratcheting box end 10mm also come in handy
iirc, i didnt need service mode to do timing chains either.
