Anyone know the story behind the hidden "dangers" of using a cell phone in a MINI without an external antenna? If this has been discussed already (and I'm sure it has) - any help with finding the thread is appreciated

Thanks

How funny that I just sent my dealer an email on this exact same question. I will let you know what he tells me.

I've read some of the posts on this topic. As far as my experience goes, I've used my cell with an ear piece attached and I haven't experienced any issues with the vehicle. So far so good, but I may be playing with fire. I'm also interested in hearing what Rynomaximus's dealer says.

OOOOPPPPSSS, I've been using mine in LBC1 ever since I got him [Coopie] on September 11 here in Portland from Rasmussen's and I've never heard anything go wrong. What's that all about?

I'm guessing that it's just BMW covering their asses. The airlines have made a big stink about cell phones interfering with airplane electronics, so BMW is probably just putting up the disclaimer to protect itself from the legions of blood sucking lawyers that roam America looking for stupid people to use as plaintiffs against companies with deep pockets.

I see no reason why a mobile phone would affect a MINI any differently than it would any other car.

Okay here is the verdict. My dealer said that this was nothing to worry about. He doesn't know why BMW placed this statement on everything, but using your cell phone without an external anteana will not damageyour MINI in any way. He said the only problem with using a cell phone and driving a MINI, is mastering the head tilt to hold the phone between your shoulder and ear, while shifting.

those "Hang up and drive" bumper stickers are great.

i've been using my phone also with no problems, my sales associates says she uses her phone in the MINI's all the time, and my friend lives in his BMW with his cell phone and hasn't had a problem. like Soopa said, coverage of the boo-tay.

MINI is trying to cover their case regarding a phenomenon called "caging". Caging occurs when you attempt to use a cel phone within a metal structure and a substantial amount of the RF radiation is reflected back to you, the user. Many feel excess RF radiation has a harmful effect on the brain.

Behaps the risk (1 in a trillion?) that the phone can attract lightning with the sunroof open and you (and your phone) are not grounded.....hehe
