I have another post in the forum about replacing my timing chain, but wanted to ask this question separately:

There are a few specialized tools for replacing the chain and tensioners, which is hopefully a job most owners are only going to do once while they own the car. Seems like a waste to buy the whole set of tools to only use them once.

I used to own a VW Golf TDi, and there were a few folks who owned the timing tools and would rent them out to people doing the job. It kept you from spending $200-300 on a set of tools, and helped offset the cost of the tools for the owners.

Anyone on here willing to rent me their set?

Go on Amazon / ebay. Plenty of kits there. They work fine. Some you need to grind or cut off a bit to fit if the turbo is in place but other wise they do the trick.

 

Buy a set used on ebay and then sell them when you're done.

That's an easy way to "rent" them!

 

like Jakomcbean said.. lots ot kits on Amazon for cheap. I think I paid like 35 for mine.
