04 Mini Cooper S NavSat question

Forgive me if this has already been asked…

I recently had some water damage with my NavSat unit under the seat. So I got a replacement one off of eBay. The seller claimed it was in 100% working order but when I hooked it up, it gave me a read error and said to insert to CD/Dvd into the navigational computer. The DVD that came with the unit was a 2003 DVD and the seller told me I needed a 2004 DVD because my car was a 2004. So I used my original 2004 DVD into the replacement unit I got offline and it still gave me the same error. THEN he told me I needed to have the NavSat unit reprogrammed by the dealer so it would work with my vehicle. Does this sound like a faulty unit or do I have to get it programmed by the dealer after all? Any help would be appreciated. I kinda need an answer soon if I’m gonna send it back and get a refund for a faulty part. Thanks!!!

Sorry to be answering late but for the benefit of others, that’s a bad drive.

you might can take it apart and clean the laser and get it to work, or swap parts from you old iPhone to get a good one from 2 units, but that’s the issue. It’s not reading the disc. It’s the exact same unit as in my 04 bmw wagon.
