I haven't started dailying this new to me 2004 JCW yet, but soon. And the cupholders under the switch panel are ummm... Well. You guys know how "useful" they are. And finding the one at the back of the center console that actually does fit something is somewhat distracting. So I thought I'd try a no-drill solution and see how it worked.
I've been using RAM products in my 4x4s for years and they work as advertised, so why not in a mini?
1. Took the screw out of the bottom of the cupholder, replaced it with a longer one.
2. Took my round base RAM ball and drilled a new hole a little further to center (okay, when I said no-drill, I meant the car, yes? 🤣 )
3. Clamped a RAM arm and RAM Level Cup to the base.
It's only one screw but the round base is almost the full diameter of the bottom of the cupholder so feels solid?
Here it is with a Rambler onboard.
We'll see how it works but sometimes simple is good. Easily removable or adjustable by undoing the clamp on the arm. The RAM ball is virtually invisible in the original "cupholder".

Pretty cool/ingenious!
Unfortunately I have 4 simple rules in my Mini: 1) No smoking, 2) ABSOLUTELY No food/eating, 3) No beverages of ANY kind. 4) Sit back and hold on.
However; I do like your idea/solution.
