"Functional Limitation of HeadUnit" problem - 2018 F60
Curious if anyone else has had this experience? 2018 Countryman S All4, 29,000 miles, off warranty about 8 months ago. Battery died a few days ago, and during the 3 mile local drive right before the battery failed, I noticed the Nav display, instead of the map, was a little globe icon with arrows spinning around it and the words "Starting Navigation System" in upper left. Battery failed and with a jump start got it to a dealer for the $550! battery install including system re-set. Thereafter the Nav system continues to display the "Starting Navigation System" message with one brief exception where the map displayed for a few minutes, but next time I started the car it was back to "Starting Navigation System" loop.
Back to the dealer a few days later/today anyway (for the $$$! motor mount replacement) so ask them to figure out what's going on with the Nav. Dealer says technician checked it out and "there is a fault stored in the car for 'functional limitation of headunit' which is the module that controls the radio/entertainment system. With everything else working as it should be, that limitation seems to be the navigation/map part of it. It states it has happened 3 times, this doesn't happen with a battery replacement, as done quite a few batteries on different cars with no issues... So there are 3 options for this, first we can try programming the software to update it and see if that fixes it, which would be $210, but there is a chance that it could make some things worse... We wouldn't know until it's done. The other option is to replace the module completely which is not cheap... The last option is to leave it as it is, and the map/nav feature would not be available most of the time".
I think my choice will be to do nothing, and rely on Waze or another service for Navigation, and hope this headunit problem does not morph into other problems. Spending $210 to try not to make it worse doesn't seem like a good risk to take at least until I can see if not having Nav bothers me. I do like that the turn by turns in the Mini Nav show in the Heads Up Display, and mostly have found Mini Nav to be pretty accurate in my major metro area.
Anyone else have this problem, or experience resolving it with re-programming?
Thanks in advance!

"hi mate. Get an enet cable and i can help you to flash the unit and hopefully it will be ok. Pm and share the vin or ping me on whatsapp. Cheers!"
Thank you! and the other kind soul who PMd me about assisting! I might well take you up on it. As now I am spending a little time to see what the bugs really are and how much they annoy me. The Mini Nav is eternally restarting, and I find CarPlay nav apps are okay but not perfect. Waze works but has just become mute.
I've ordered the Mini Owners Manual for Navigation, Entertainment and Communications (or somesuch name) which is indeed referenced in the owner's manual as something to get from the dealer but I'm 0 for 2 in local dealers knowing about the existence of such a book. Ordered it from Out Motoring and should have in a few days. Hope I learn something from it.
