F54 DIY Brake pad replacement, service reset question
DIY Brake pad replacement, service reset question
I replaced my front pads in my 2019 F54 over the weekend when the maintenance minder said I had 900 miles left before 'service due' on them. The actual sensor on my pads did not trip, in fact the pads had a pretty good amount of thickness left to them.
When I went to reset the service interval using two different methods, both failed. The first method I tried was with the pricey BimmerLink app. The phone app says "try resetting again, and if it still fails, pull your error codes to try and troubleshoot." So I tried again, it still failed, and I pulled error codes...the only codes present were related to my upgraded infotainment system (more on that at the end).
I then tried to reset the service interval using the odometer trick. That is: get in the car, fasten seatbelt, switch power to on (but do not start the car), make sure the car is in neutral with the parking brake off. Then using the dash info selector button (on the left stalk) so that the instrument info has the blank 'additional info' setting. Hold the trip reset button in until it shows the service reminder under the speedo. Hold the trip reset button again until I'm prompted to reset the reminder. Hold the trip reset button again and it says "Resetting..." with a little status bar. Then it says "Reset unsuccessful"...
I've been reading conflicting advice about the proper brake pad change procedure though. Prior to doing my pads, I had read that, so long as the sensor hasn't tripped, you can just keep the sensor and re-use it. So that's what I did. Just wiped the little metal push tab clean and stuck it into the new pad. Subsequently, I've read other sites which state that the sensor must be replaced when you change the pads. And yet other sites say that you can get by with the old sensor but have to remove it and then plug it back in.
I'm wondering if anybody has definitive info on the correct procedure, what works, and what doesn't? I did order up a new sensor, but basically wondering if it's possible my swapped infotainment unit could have something to do with it -- I upgraded my visual boost radio to a nbt evo with nav and carplay previously. Or do sensors have a unique serial number or some stupid thing in them, and you have to replace the sensor/change the serial number in order to do the Reset operation? Thanks for any tips ;-).
