NM has a new style exhaust, no muffler per se in the rear, only a Helmholtz resonator.
For those not familiar with the concept, its size is tuned to cancel out a certain frequencies.
Still has a straight through front resonator for cabin comfort.
Those exhaust are pretty cool. Goodwin Racing has had versions available for the Miata for a few years. Manga flow has started experimenting with them, too. The advantage to the Helmholtz chamber is zero drone when cruising on the highway, if they are tuned properly. These types of exhaust will give you bark when you want it, and quiet when you want it, without resorting to a valved system, which adds complexity and a failure point.
Personally, I like these types of mechanical solutions, because they keep it simple. Just like a mechanical ‘torsen’ style LSD can be better than a clutch style when it comes to maintenance and simplicity.
