If I am not mistaken, NBT and NBT EVO was available starting from F56 models. If you have R56 most likely you have CIC.

Maccoder thanks a ton! I do have R56. Hopefully the "most likely" applies. Appreciate the link I will send a pic and see what they say. Any personal experience with the Cheer Driving solution? There are a few wireless air play "modules" out there, at first glance it looks pretty good

No experience/association with Cheer Driving Solutions - just one of the results that's been returned by online search. 
I've retrofitted the aftermarket CarPlay enabled stereo inside nav speedo (my 2013 R56 MCS didn't have navigation originally).

Don't rule out CCC (map data on DVD). Here is an overview on a german Mini forum:
