Dead Battery - 2017 F54

I made the mistake of parking my 2017 F54 for 2 months.

When I went to start the car the battery was almost stone cold dead. It had enough power to start throwing messages, but would not crank.

I was able to jump it and start it up, but it doesn’t seem to charge.

Is the battery toast? I am afraid of “registering” the battery since it is original and 4+ years old.

Anyone have suggestions or can educate me on this issue?

Thanks!

Have you put it on a charger?

If not, how long did you let it run after you finally got it started? I’d probably drive it >45 minutes to get a good charge back into battery.

Yes, took it out of the car and charged it for 6 hours.

before that I did drive the car for about 30 minutes, but all during the drive the headlights flickered, the A/C would not turn on and the anti-skid brake message kept coming on.

Certainly could be bad then. I too have a 2017 (2016 build) and I replaced my battery in Dec. 2019 because it was getting weak to start in the cold.

Probably could have made a warranty claim, but I’m so far from the dealer it wouldn’t be worth my time.

Replaced it with an Autocraft Platinum H7 AGM. To me it appeared to be the exact same battery at the original MINI one, minus the stickers. I registered the new battery with a Foxwell NT530

Thanks for the info. I will replace it since it is older and likely shot now.

My November 2016 build 2017 All4 S battery also died recently without any warning. I got a DieHard through Advance Auto..... I was able to register the battery easily using Carly. Although, a lot of people use Bimmercode, which should also work. Don't pay the dealer to install it. If you are comfortable working on your own car, there are a few good Youtube videos out there that can walk you through the actual install. It does take some dis-assembly at the firewall. The hardest part is lifting the damn battery out of the car! Good Luck.

Ha! That was the hardest part! I thought I could shortcut taking the battery out, but Noooo, you have to take off all the plastic parts to money it out.

The good news was I bought one at our local BMW place for a few bucks cheaper than the Advance Auto.

The bad news is my Bluedriver app didn’t want to cooperate so I couldn’t register the battery.

I am waiting on a call from their tech support to see if they can figure out why the app won’t work for me. If it doesn’t work I will download the Bimmerlink. I have the BimmerCode app but didn’t see where you can register using that.

Good thing I have a spare Mini! 😁

I don't have the BimmerCode app, but just assumed you could register the battery with it. I bought the Carly when I first bought my Clubby to do some coding. It's relatively simple and easy. Doesn't do all the subtle changes BimmerCode can do, but did enough to get what I wanted. Bonus is being able to register the battery along with a few other functions. I guess it's more of a does a few things well and others OK type of app.....

Thanks all for the help! I was able to finally register the battery using my “BlueDriver App”.

The issue I had was that using my Mini “Toggle” ignition switch when ever you push it in the up or down position the BlueDriver App sees the car in the ACC mode. In that mode the BlueDriver app will NOT register the battery.

You have to “toggle” the ignition switch UP (or down) to get the car in the Ignition ON (or as the BlueDriver sees it - ACC Mode) then just push the Toggle again as if you are turning the car OFF. AS you know, when doing that, even though we think the car is OFF. The car fans (computer???etc…) are still running and making noise. So in fact the car is still alive.

That’s when you now induce the BlueDriver app to “Register” the battery. Took like 15 seconds and DONE!

As a side note, looking at the BimmerCode app and features I did see options to change the amps if needed. E.G. - 80a to 70a, etc…. I replaced with the exact type/brand battery so I didn’t need to do that. But good to know in the future if I had to put a different amp battery in.
