C'ya 2884, and hello to the R56 I never knew... O.M.G.O.S.H!

Howdy.

I've have Pearle (2008 R56) for about two years. She's been quirky, but still fun. 2884 has been a thing since just about the beginning. I've replaced this and that, checked and rechecked things, read all the forums and postings (well, sometimes TLDR is a thing, so maybe it's better to say I mostly skimmed them), and have been tinkering around a lot trying to get rid of that code. Since it always seemed that 2884 was a tricky one to track down, I wasn't too worried; figured I would get it eventually.

Well, eventually happened last night!

It was the dang vacuum pump waste gate check valve!!!

The source of all my 2884!!!

When I go back and reread some of the posts that are out there, I fully expect to find that this little bugger was called out quite clearly. Well, if so, I missed it!

If you are dealing with 2884, CHECK THE VACUUM PUMP WASTE GATE CHECK VALVE. LIKE, RIGHT NOW! GO ON. DO IT.

Having said all that, it turns out that a properly closed waste gate makes a huge difference! This car is so much faster now, it's embarrassing. Well, it's not really embarrassing. It's awesome.

I hadn't driven a Mini before taking Pearle for that first test drive, so I literally had no idea.

I'm just glad my long 2884 journey is over, and hopefully your 2884 journey is short and painless.

Anyone have a link to what a vacuum pump wastegate check valve is? Google isn't being helpful and I'm not sure where to look for it. Trying to chase down a 2884 code as well.
Thanks!

Hey there. The vacuum pump wastegate check valve is the little brass elbow sticking out of the bottom of the vacuum pump. The hose that comes off of that elbow goes to the turbo waste gate plunger thing. I was able to take the check valve off and take it apart and clean it up and reassemble it and put it back on without too much trouble. Just be careful because the insides are tiny.

Thanks for the reply. The site won't let me attach a pic for some reason. Are you talking about the brass 90 degree hose barb on the right side of the first pic here?

Yup, that's the one. And I misspoke a little, since that vacuum hose doesn't go directly to the turbo wastegate actuator. But it gets there eventually.

Thanks crisper! I got my pump out last night and will clean it up today. Hopefully I can figure out this 2884 code. I ordered some new pump gaskets too because the current ones are flat and hard.

My pump had a lot of scratches inside so I bought a new one. Finally got the new one in and the 2884 code reappeared as soon as I punched it going up the canyon again. Damn it.

You cannot get that little piece on its own. Part of the vacuum pump. Going to change this out myself as i got the code.

Got lucky and just needed to clean it.

If you haven't tried yet, maybe take the elbow off and give it a good cleaning before ordering a whole new assembly. That's all I needed to do. Hope that works for you!

Ok, thanks for the help. I got the whole thing on order anyway. The vacuum pumps can wear and lock up in time. Mine is original, so just some insurance.

Its going to be that or the hose also as they tend to crack: https://www.ecstuning.com/Search/Sit...h/11657570465/
