I have an 05 R52 that when I got it the radio did not work. no lights not nothing the only thing that came on is the illumination at night when you turn the lights on. So when I bought it it came with a Sony radio to go in its place so i figure no big deal I can swap a radio and this one has BT and such. well then I find out the Sony wont work due to the HK system without new wires and speakers run so I would rather just throw a stock radio in place. My question is will any stock HK radio from a 1st gen mini work? Also I keep seeing people talk about a boost radio and the HK and what's the differences how do i tell them apart if they are not in the car?
PS I did wire up the new radio to a adapter harness and got to the point of plugging it in and I know the power and all works just my stock radio is dead.
AFAIK the “HK radio” was the same and the HK functions/settings just get unlocked when when connected to an HK system. Any matching radio to the original should work. However, the very early radios (before early 2003?) didn’t have the ability to add an aux input, and later radios (around early 2005) added MP3 CD playback so check date of manufacture sticker if it matters.
ok thats what i was trying to figure out as the radio that was in my mini looked like all the rest I have seen.
except for that **** some one put on it!

Reason: new info
I thought I read somewhere that the early head unit's were coded? Meaning that you had to have the code to unlock the radio to make it work in your car
So i picked up a stock radio out of an 04 every thing plugs in as expected but now it says disable on the display. So now looking where to go from here!
I did actually! Turns out that under the carpet on the passenger side in front of the amp mounted to the metal of the body is a conector that has a bunch of the k bus wires in it. One of mine was corroded and not conected well. So I cut the plug off and reconnected all the wires and that got all of my things that were not working back to working. The radio works now, the rear defrost, the top, and the back up prox alarm.
