Exhaust coming through vents

Hey guys....and/or gals, I noticed an exhaust smell the other day inside the cabin and it was a tad smoky as well. A few minutes ago I had it pouring out my dash vents and wondering what or where to look to figure this out??? Not really the way I wanna go out!! Haha. Thanks in advance!!

Was it exhaust or was it coolant steam? I would find it much more likely that the heater core blew out, and started billowing steam into the cabin, than I would expect exhaust smoke to be pumped in...
