All is well but no SC whine

Hi All,

I have been the owner of an 06 MCS for 4k miles and till now have not heard my SC whine!

It has the stock pulley, mufflers deleted, and a new intake. I do rev beyond 6-7k often when I am on it (learning stick) and have never heard the SC whine (over the exhaust). The water temp is good, I do not hear any weird noises from the SC side, I do not think I am missing any power or have a dip in the powerband.

Based on my research on forums, I have tried a few things, changed the belt (The tensioner looks to be strong, don't remember the number of holes on it), checked the TB bypass valve and it is springy, put a new intake on (cold/hot air whatever you want to call it) in hopes to hear the SC.

According to the PO the SC was serviced about 10k miles ago.
Is it possible for SC to function 'properly' and not whine? Say if someone overfilled the oil during its service.

Sadly I am not in a position to take it apart until Feb and wanted to know if I should be concerned. I recently realized what I was missing out on while looking at videos of different exhaust systems.

What else can I try/check? Zip tie the bypass valve closed?

Thanks!

Do not zip tie the bypass valve. That's just asking for trouble. What cold air intake system did you install? Most air is drawn through the cowl opening below the windshield and CAIs normally have an enlarged opening there for higher air flow. That's where you can hear the whine. But, it's possible your exhaust is so loud you can't hear it.

If your exhaust is really loud it can drown out a lot of the noise, while on a video, the SC can almost sound louder/ more obvious than while in the car.

i started with a stock pulley and air box with a cat back exhaust- you could hear the SC but not a lot. I put on the 15% pulley and could hear it quite a bit more. Put on an open air box from Alta and a k and n filter, and that drowns out the SC noise again.

I got this on a deal.
Amazon Amazon

The exhaust is loud but not deafening at high rpm, but since the whine is a whole different frequency shouldn't I be able to hear it? I hear my power steering whine at slow speeds.

I had the stock airbox for about 2.5 k miles without SC whine and then started to fiddle around. I thought I read that putting a 'better' breathing filter made the whine louder. Maybe I am mistaken.

I am waiting for a Borla exhaust to check if the exhaust noise is drowning the SC whine and for more practicality . But I will be surprised if that is so.

I don't have the best ears, but I never really noticed the whine with my stock airbox. When I changed it, it was OBVIOUS. Even with my Milltek nonresonated exhaust, the whine is very noticeable.

I'm guessing that intake may not focus/amplify the sound like an enclosed airbox does.

Mine sounds like this with the JCW airbox (and JCW exhaust). You can definitely hear the whine

Hello All,

I put a Borla exhaust and now all is well! I hear the SC whine and my ears have thanked me.

Thanks.
