Throttle body upgrade for the w10 engines (non s)

Hey what’s going on everyone I’ve been on NAM for quite some time doing research and learning a lot from old posts and new , also learned a lot of tips and tricks, with that said I’ve attempted to do a quick nice a affordable upgrade to make my daily r50 a little faster and wanted to share with everyone here, i can confirm that after a bit of modding you can fit a r53 S throttle body onto the r50 intake manifold , just need to have Patience when drilling the holes bigger on the s throttle body with that said enough with talk here are the pics

The throttle body on the r53 are definitely bigger and i don’t think you can go any bigger without losing power

Well worth the upgrade

the power difference is crazy !!
doesn’t peel out as much as my jcw r53 with dsc off but it does peel out and pull harder, the freeway drive is such a amazing drive , and the best thing about it is I’m still getting really good gas mileage

At the end of the day i just wanted to share a quick easy mod to help my mini crew out make your non s cars a little faster 😀

Awesome !
Too bad there's not a cheaper option for a larger r53 throttlebody though..

yea a lot of places sell it for like 300+ but this one costed me less than $100 but the time it took to drill it and make sure it was good took the longest

Pretty sure they aren't round. I think he just made them oval because the bolt pattern is slightly different on the R50.

If simply enlarge the holes instead of oval, will it work?

It looks like he elongated the holes towards the groove for the o-ring to match the hole pattern on the smaller R50 throttle body.

This mod used to be popular in England on the Mk 1 Golf (Rabbit) GTI. Fitting the throttle body, with larger diameter butterfly, from a later GTI or Audi. Had to port the inlet manifold to match it to get any benefit though, but definitely a worthwhile mod on the Golf.

I was actually just wondering if there was much benefit from the larger throttle body when it's paired with the stock intake manifold. I've never had mine off, so I don't know if there is a size difference or not. I know a few places offer ported R50 throttle bodies though.

Enlarged doesn't work, will fill up the holes. Drill to match the stock throttle body. Intake manifold is too small, need to port. But don't think can match the cooper S throttle body diameter, will be too thin. May crack.

i just found any drill that fit into the intake manifold hole, i didn’t have to drill much to get the 4 holes to align up to the intake tube

I often sell fully ported r53 intake manifolds if your interested.
And i actually port the heck out of them.and reshape air paths to correct airflow and get rid of dead spots and cyl#1 fueling issues caused by uneven air distribution..
Ive seen the old-school wmw ( I believe it was them )ported intakes they used to sell and my porting work is much more extensive and i port the inlet too NOT just the outlet ports.

Did you need to tune your car after you put on the r53 throttole body or did it all automatically adjust with the ecu.
