I recently bought a 2011 r60 s ALL4 I just changed the oil filter housing gasket and turbo feed tube due to an oil leak. Had the front end up on jack stands and in service mode. Got the car put back together had normal issues with codes coming in due to the work performed. But now the rear diff won’t disengage. It drives in a straight line fine but when I turn it clunks pretty hard. I tried unhooking the battery for an hour checked the front wheel speed sensors since I had the front tires off. Unhooked the sensor on top of the rear diff but no luck. ItThere are no codes and nothing seems to be out of place. I don’t know where to begin on this. I’m not 100 percent positive but my vehicle should have the electronic locking diff. Is there a fuse for this? I wouldn’t think if there was a problem it would default to being engaged. Any help is greatly appreciated
Update. It does seem to be disengaging while the sensor on top of the diff is unhooked but then the front seems like it is engaged

We have just been through this just last month. We ended up having to replace the rear differential. Nothing else fixed the problem. Swapped differentials no more problems. In the process of tearing down the old one to see whats causing the issue internally.
I did a bunch of troubleshooting with the car on jack stands yesterday and then dropped the driveline. The problem was gone. Then I realized that the input on the differential was spinning while rotating the tires and you couldn’t stop it. So I pulled off the emcd unit and noticed that the input and output shafts on it would not spin freely from one another. Decided to tear it down and found that the clutch pack was destroyed and the bearing holding the output shaft in was also destroyed. Needless to say the emcd unit is bad. There isn’t a lot of info anywhere on the Internet regarding this topic. I took photos of the disassembly if you would like to see them
I had a binding issue come up, took it to mini dealer who diagnosed it as a failed rear clutchpack that caused the rear diff to fail.
Swapped the entire rear assembly with a ~70k junkyard donor and the problem was gone.
Swapped out clutch (as in manual trans, it was time at 114k), and started having this huge "studder/shudder" when engaging from a stop. Like the whole dash shaking violently. I thought it was maybe motor mount. Then I put summer shoes on and it studder went away. At the same time I also noticed my Mistress all the sudden feeling a little peppier....and now I break traction on front wheels. Yup, I have 0 power to rear wheels now. Never any griding (that I heard) or noise. Just that studder, and that was only at take off. All other gear changes were fine.
So obviously something broke/failed. I haven't gotten under her to even start to diagnose. I'm half hoping it's the rear clutch pack, and I can rebuild the old rear carrier that I never got rid of and swap that back in....
Hey, I am about to swap the read diff clutch pack on my R60. As you noted, there is not a lot of info online about this job. I got access to a repair manual that involves dropping the exhaust & drive shaft and it looks like the rear diff is also in part removed in their steps. I'm curious what was involved in your repair? You mentioned that you have some photos... if you could share those, that would be awesome. Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

that would be great if you could share pics. I’ll msg you if you’re not sure how to share on here.
so after my clutch fiasco (I’ll share more about that some other time), I took my r60 to the mini dealer just before the 3rd party ext warr ran out. They said it was the rear diff that failed, and they got that part replaced. The ext warr wouldn’t replace the emcd unit though, because it was a “wearable” item (-clutch- pack). Fine. Picked up a rear carrier assembly and am now trying to separate the emcd off, but can’t seem to figure it out. Removed the 4 bolts, but can’t seem to bang it loose. Already broke off a piece (circled)
trying to knock it free. Outside of using a chisel at the seam am I missing something? I was going to also use some heat on it to maybe loosen the sealant between the two pieces

Did you ever figure out how to get the clutch assembly separated from the differential?
