R60 VANOS codes 2C58, 2D54, 2D60 - Limp mode

VANOS codes 2C58, 2D54, 2D60 - Limp mode

My wifes 2014 All4 went into limp mode and had three codes:
  • 2C58 - Charging Pressure Control - switch off as consequence (I assume this is limp mode)
  • 2D54 - Variable camshaft timing control (VANOS), exhaust, cold start not controllable
  • 2D60 - VANOS, Exhaust control fault. Camshaft stuck
So I replaced the exhaust VANOS solenoid on the back side of the engine. Reset the ECU. Drove for 50 miles and nothing came back on, awesome. This morning, I went to start it up, before starting it instantly had limp mode and shows only two codes now:
  • 2C58 - Charging Pressure Control - switch off as consequence (I assume this is limp mode)
  • 2D54 - Variable camshaft timing control (VANOS), exhaust, cold start not controllable
Any ideas? Do I need to change the intake VANOS sensor as well?

The exhaust VANOS is on the front of the engine... the back side solenoid is for the intake cam. (front being towards the bumper, and back being towards the windshield)

Wow Thank you so much for that. I definitely just replaced a working part with a working part.
I could likely replace the front exhaust one, with the working intake one I removed right?

That would be a good way to troubleshoot the exhaust solenoid. If the problem goes away, you know that's what the problem was. If it was me, I would get a new solenoid for the exhaust side. In fact, it was me last fall. I had the same "exhaust, cold start not controllable" fault, and decided to replace both and called it maintenance.

I am assuming the issues I have in this thread are very similar.

I have ordered two solenoids. When they come in I will change them and see if that corrects the issue. Just in case, I also ordered two cam position sensors as well. All low $$ parts so like you said, maintenance.

Hi there. What was the result of your changing the second VANOS solenoid? Did that resolve your problem. I have the same 3 errors as you and I already replace both VANOS solenoids. I'm wondering now if the replacement was defective.

I am in the same boat, I did both solenoids and a full timing job and I am still getting these codes! Any update?

I can't believe you did the timing and still have these codes. That's discouraging. I did a smoke test on the weekend and found that the vent hose had a slight leak so we pushed it in a bit harder until we heard a click. Then no more smoke from there or anywhere else, so I have to rule out a leak. I already have the cam sensors so I'll replace those next. I'll let you know what happens after that.

I'm getting them as well now. Not always, not sure exactly how to reproduce. I have replaced the solenoids and cam sensors and have the timing chain tensioner coming as about the last thing I can do myself. I was thinking of taking off the top cover to see what the timing chain looks like. It appears there is a tool also to measure stretch from the hole for the tensioner.

I am surely hoping it doesn't need a new timing chain, I have a new tensioner from Detroit Tuned and ordered the tool to measure the stretch in the chain.

Dealer recommended I replace both VANOS sprockets along with new solenoids, chain, guids, and tensioner...for $4,500. I declined since the only thing I had not done on my end was the sprockets. So today I changed those and re-timed the engine and I am STILL GETTING 2D5A: Intake camshaft stuck. I am basically out of parts to replace so I have no idea what is going on.

Fixed!

So I performed an oil flush with seafoam and replaced the intake VANOS solenoid (again) along with the VANOS sprockets and it works!

I think the car was just so gunked up from the BS 10k oil changes that there was a lot to clean out.

Awesome good news, I just replaced the Solenoid (again) also and my codes went away. There was some gunk on the screen of it. I will also have to start changing the oil more regularly on this thing.

Since it's been a year, how is now? Still good?

Is yours still good as well? I'm going to look at mine again as well. I think I put in Standard Motor Products solenoids last year, and now I see I should have put in Pierburgs. I wonder if that's the problem? I still get a 2D54 code randomly at some point after I start the car - usually when I accelerate on the highway - but once I clear it, it usually goes away, and doesn't come back on until sometime after the next startup. Did you change the VANOS sprockets too?

Yes! I sold the car a few months ago but the fix worked. These engines are very susceptible to issues when you skimp on oil changes and every owner out there seems to think oil changes are optional.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, maybe 10k kms (6k miles) is too long of an interval in high mileage engines. I'll tell my son to do it every 7500 kms (4500 miles). How about the sprocket job? Was it difficult? Do you recall how much time it took? Thanks

The sprocket job was not hard, and I think it took about 2 hours. BUT, you MUST ensure the car stays in time. I would just buy a timing kit and use it to lock the car in time when you are doing the sprockets.

As to oil changes, 4500 miles seems OK, but you can literally never change your oil too much so if you want to shorten that interval that would not hurt.
