Rear speaker upgraded.. no bass

Are there any tips here? I put morel's in the front of my friends car and they have awesome punch, added same set to the rear and have no bass at all. I'm sure my hookups and tuning are correct - its a fully aftermarket setup with amps. Is it an airspace issue? The front of the speaker is near the panel, I removed the oem grills, and I reused the oem foam to seal it to the panel. Would it be possible to make a rear enclosure out of dynamat or something like that? Seems like maybe that big rear gap for the roof armature may be a bit too big and its too freeair?!

Following this post as I was about to step into the same project. One of my factory rears is shot and I'm on the fence about gutting the whole system and going aftermarket.

the details of the setup are largely irrelevant. Its all good stuff. I just want to know if anyone had the same midbass problem and if they solved it. The problem is car-specific not audio specific. When the speakers were in the front they hit so hard I could feel it in the seat backs, the same speakers in the rear have no midbass.

I recently did an upgrade with a car audio shop. It seems that the rear speakers have 2 sets of wires going to them. Not sure why. One of them has LOTS of bass, the other, not so much. I suspect you've hooked up the latter.

Thanks for the reply, and thats good info. All of my wiring is new and directly wired to the amps, soldered to the speaker etc.. I'm sure its a car physics problem. the power and lines are all the same as when I had them hooked up front. I'm looking for suggestions on tightening up the midbass for the rear of the mini specifically. I will try dynamat and some sound deadening inside, but I was wondering if anyone had tried something else with good results.

In my case, I kept the HK system head unit and amp and replaced the front components and rear mid drivers with JL Audio CS series. It's VERY clear that the stock speakers were designed to work with the HK amp and DSP. My next step is to rip out the HK amp and stock head unit. That will fix my midrange suckout.
Can you elaborate what your setup consists of?
I built a system from the ground up in my previous R50 and it had great SQ.
I'm an audio guy, and would love to help 🙂

Thanks for the info. Are you using the factory wiring harness, or did you bypass it and run all new wire? It almost sounds as if one of them is out of phase - double check the wiring polarity of the rear speakers. Beyond that, you're probably right about it being the car. Maybe fabricate a rear baffle? Quite possible that the rear speaker cavity is larger than the door panel, and is affecting the overall Q of the driver.

I only used a wiring harness to make power/ground etc for the radio easier. The Sony feeds signal to the amps via rcas.. I am using no audio signal wires from the car for any part of the stereo. I can check polarity again, but I am pretty sure its correct. Good idea. Yah Ithink even if I cant seal it because the roof mechanics go behind there, maybe I can direct the rear wave in such a way that its not cancelling the front etc.. Maybe I can make a tiny enclosure.. maybe with dynamat doubled up or something. Itll be hard to get a real enclosure in there.

From the amp to the speakers, are you using your own wire, or tapping into the factory speaker wire runs?
