Help with Federal Emissions Sticker for classic mini in CA
Help with Federal Emissions Sticker for classic mini in CA
I recently purchased a 1974 Innocenti Mini Cooper 1300 Export from Oregon. During the out of state title transfer with CA DMV, all went well except for the lack of a Federal Emissions sticker, which is required of all vehicles 1968 and newer. They mentioned I needed to contact the manufacturer to get a sticker for the vehicle and Mini BMW just shrugged and said it was built out of country and they couldn't give me a sticker as a result. It's all a bit crazy to me, as the vehicle is smog exempt. This sticker is literally just an informational sticker and I have no idea how to get my hands on one now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I'd call the folks at Mini Mania or Seven Enterprises and seek some help
both of these places do a LOT of classic Mini business, have been around for a LONG time and are in CA
in the past both have been willing to spend time on the phone with a potential customer . . .

Find a photo of one... print it out... laminate it, double stick tape and call it good....
Or have a sticker shop print it out.
Or "make one" that looks right and has all the correct info...

So, I considered making a sticker that looked like the real deal, but ended up having a cop fill out the paperwork for me. As long as it’s filled out by an authorized agent, the DMV could care less. Problem solved.
anti-climatic!!
In VA to transfer a title I had to have cop sign papers verifying the VIN ...... fortunately I lived next to a cop cuz what are you going to do .. go inside to the desk and ask for this service ... they'll laugh at you. <ask how I know

In Florida when VIN verification was needed for title transfer, the Florida DMV person walked outside with me .... OMG

That is going to be a tough row to hoe since there has been no federally certified mini since 1967. By the letter of the law your car still needs to be emissions compliant even if your not getting it smogged annually.
