Navigation & AudioAudio upgrades, bluetooth, and navigation discussions surrounding the Clubman (R55), Cooper and Cooper S (R56), and Cabrio (R57) MINIs.
i've searched and searched and searched and have yet to find a situation like my current situation.
i've got a 2012 S ... no bluetooth, no USB, no CD changer, no navigation system, has the harmon kardon audio system.
there's a "hands free" law, here, in minnesota, and so, i want to add bluetooth to my car so i can comply.
most of the threads i've found dealt with older minis and i can't recall seeing any that had the HK system.
i'm very mechanically adept and if i have to take the dash apart, i'm more than capable of doing that.
and so
i'm hoping someone can offer me some insight as to what i should be looking for, parts-wise.
i've contemplated going the factory route and buying all the parts, or adding a Parrot unit, or lastly, a fiscon unit.
i've found weak info on all of the above approaches. so. any input would be much appreciated.
Check out the Amazon Echo Auto device. Ive been using it for a couple months and it works amazingly well for bluetooth audio and phone. I’m still working on the best location to mount the device for achieving the best phone microphone results. It utilizes the audio input and comes with the USB plug for charging in the 12v outlet.
It bluetooth connects to my phone quicker than any device Ive ever used. Amazon did a great job on its functionality. It works like the Echo home speakers. “Alexa, play.....” and it does it.
I purchased a cheap Monster Bluetooth connector. I plug the USB end into the mini and it has an Aux output that's plugged right next to it. Works great so far. My only gripe is that I have to turn the unit on when I start the car.
From what I understand..... being App driven... it is updated often for new phones .
Looks like they upgraded the mic last year.... I really like having the external mic and not the one in my iPhone because that one picks up air noise from my vents.
The remote home button that you can stick anywhere.... I really like that.... and works with Android or iPhone.
If you don't have an Aux input... it has an FM option as well.
I needed a solution for my work van...I have a Roav bluetooth FM transmitter. It works great, I've put one in the Mini. You choose a radio station to preset, it will stream music and calls over bluetooth, has a high output charger, also takes a flash drive and has aux input. Very handy for $25. Best Buy and my local Walmart also carry them. Link--

Thats very neat. If I had seen this a month ago I would probably have got one. Does it contain a mic for handsfree calls, or is it just a bluetooth/radio link that uses the phone mic for calls? Also, is it possible to play files from a plugged in USB drive?
As it was I just shelled out $15 for a different Roav unit and it works a treat. USB power from my charger in the lighter socket, 3.5mm jack plugs into my existing radio as AUX input. Mounted the unit that contains the mic in the little change cubby in front of the hand brake. Sound quality is OK. With the roof down windnoise is an issue, but thats probably true of any other solution. For the simplicity and cost its hard to beat.
