Cooper (non-S) Should I remove the aftermarket turbo?
Should I remove the aftermarket turbo?
Hi everyone!
I'm picking up a 2009 mini non s tonight. The current owner told me there is an aftermarket turbo installed on it. Apparently the injectors need to be replaced for it to run.
I am considering removing the turbo as to avoid any issues. I would imagine not much work was done to the engine to accommodate the turbo being installed. At least, not as much as there should have been as it would be a lot of work to properly run a turbo on a non turbo engine.
All I know is he bought a 2012 s model from an auction, installed the exhaust from it, as well as the suspension, seats and rear bumper.
My question is this, in your opinion, should the turbo be removed to prevent the engine from grenading on my down the road?
Also, could the issue with the injectors be from the turbo?
Thanks a ton!

I hope you got a good deal on it... Working on someone else's project car doesn't sound like fun.
Getting the engine back as close to stock as possible would be a good start. Then, address any issues from there.

Going back to stock might be your best option. If he didn’t do the injectors while he was in there, probably didn’t do fuel pump etc. I’m sure there is a laundry list of stuff not done for it to run right. I would turn and run from this one.
I’m always afraid of someone else project, especially if the aren’t finished with it, you don’t know what they have or haven’t done. If you trust him ok, but I have had my mini 4 months and I’m about 3 grand deep into maintenance and performance items, car was completely stock when I got it. So your little bit of money might become more like buying a used one that runs and drives.
