Too much heat!

02 r53 with auto temp control.
Too much heat even here in Wisconsin. Two weeks ago new thermostat and housing, flush and fill.
Very little heat after said treatment, figured it was an air bubble.

Now too much! Temp control doesn't seem to do much.

Is this a sensor, air flap or ???

Which path to follow first?

I Would look at the blend door actuator. You will need to remove the glove box to get to it, but it has an arm that moves the flapper door in the plenum to regulate the amount of cold air that blends with the hot. Barring that, the thermistor may have failed in the front panel or maybe the fan. Yes, there is a fan that pulls air over the thermistor to help the panel regulate temperature. On mine, I used hot air rework to reflow the solder on the thermistor, theorizing that it may have cracked due to being lead free. It seems to have worked as my car is not oscillating from hot to cold anymore (at least not yet).

Here is a link to my YouTube channel and a video where I tear down the automatic climate control for my R50
