Blower fan speed issues

2015 All4 - First of many colder days today....have had no issues with the heater (or ac) until this morning. Car started up fine, warmed it up for 5 minutes, got in and turned up the fan speed.....did not respond to any of the speed settings. Am getting some air flow....probably a 1 or 2....but won't go any higher. Tried many combinations of heater settings but the blower speed never changed. Too dark out to check fuses right now (will in the morning but is that likely as I have some blower activity) Has anyone had similar issues? Possible causes/solutions?

A quick google search indicates that the blower motor resistor failing is the most likely cause.

Most likely. I've had a number of cars (some Japanese, too) which have required this. Hopefully it's easy to get to.

Fan Speed Update: The day I experienced the fan speed issues it was -20C (-4F), the coldest day this fall so far. I drove the car for about 45 minutes to an hour and the fan speed never changed - got something but non of the upper speeds. I took it out the following day (-15C/5F) and everything worked normally, no issues with the fan.
I also did a bit of research and the first suspect was the blower motor resistor - even priced one out and began seeking installation instructions.
This morning took the R60 out to the airport, it was -24C (-11F). The fan ran normally with all speed positions available.

Am glad that it is working (or seems to be) correctly, but hate not knowing what the issue was......with my nearest dealer a 14 hour drive away(!?) it is electrical gremlins that scares me the most....

This was happening intermittently to my 2015 Countryman for several weeks. Then yesterday (12 deg. F) the fan would not go higher than the third mark. Also, the automatic unlocking feature failed. Had to press the unlock button on the fob. Brought it to the dealer who found the battery was weak. It was likely the original one, as the car was new in October 2014, so that's not too bad I guess. Apparently, when a weak battery is detected, the system is designed to shut down some of the less critical components, which helps conserve battery power so it can continue performing more important tasks like starting the engine. The pieces fell together as he was describing this, because during the 30 minute drive to the dealer, of course, the fan started working again on the higher settings. The alternator probably charged it enough to take it out of the "danger zone." Thinking back to previous times, it seemed like the blower would start working on high after a while.

Also, there was a warning symbol next to the odometer. The manual didn't get specific on what it meant. Dealer said it could indicate multiple things. Too bad it didn't display a useful message like, "energy conservation mode - service now."

Yep, might be the weak battery and when its cold it can handle all the thing on start up. When my battery went, it started to lose all the larger electrical functions. Then it died.

You can try the blower motor resistor first: https://www.ecstuning.com/Search/Sit...h/64113422663/

Had the same trouble with mine a week ago. The fan speed indicator would respond ok but the fan speed would not change from low speed. Pulled off the neg battery for 10 minutes and it seems to have reset it. All ok now.

Pretty sure my fan issue is battery related now (and not a failing fan speed resistor).....have a 2015 All4 JCW and looks like it still has the original battery (bought the car used) which is getting weak. On colder days on start-up, sometimes see "Excessive battery discharge" notification on the screen....when I see this I don't get all the fan speeds - it is stuck on a lower setting. It doesn't seem to matter how long I drive.....the higher speeds never come back.
I installed a trickle charger and when that is plugged in I have no issues with the fan, so definitely is battery related. I am trying to get one last winter out of this battery...and will change it later this year...unless have other battery issues....prior to next winter.

Yep, mine did this also, when the battery is low the fan runs very slow till charged the next time or new battery.

Thumbs up

I know this is an older thread, but thank you... Just bought by an 2013 All4 Countryman and noticed this has been an issue.
Looks like I will start with a new battery... It definitely sounds weak when it's really cold out.

Thanks for the info

I would suggest looking at the battery first based on my experience. I installed a new battery last year and the problem almost always went away - if my R60 is left for a few days in the coldest weather (<-30) it sometimes still happens. I see 'Excessive Battery Discharge" pop up immediately when starting (easy to miss - message doesn't last very long) and the triangle icon appears next to the mileage as mentioned. A trickle charger helps if you live in a very cold climate.
Of course, if install a new battery you probably have to "register it"...lots of info on this forum about that.

i charged my battery overnight with it showing 100% in the morning and the blower fan still only works to half way. It is a 2013 and I believe it’s the original battery. Would you start with the resistor or battery. Also is there any other common things that would cause the problem? tia

If the battery is original then I would suggest replacing that first. Where I live a battery typically will only last 5 years, so if yours is original it is time to change. You will need to ‘register’ the battery to let the computer know it has been replaced.

What is the process of registering?

I’m no expert but I assume the charge rate adjusts for a battery as it ages. When you install a new battery you need to re-set the computer to let it know so that it adjusts the charge rate, etc. Some code readers can ‘register’, dealer can, or I would assume most garages familiar with Mini/BMW. There is info on this forum available regarding registering, it must be done. I suggest buying the best battery you can, Mini’s are small but their electrical demands are big.

Resistor is the easy one to change out, then i would load test the battery before that.

To register the battery if you have IBS system. Here i how you know if you have IBS.
