what parts to do headunit upgrade?

I have been reading and searching and every time I think I know what I need, I realize I don't so...

After 6 years, I am finally coming back to the mini life. I used to have a 2011 S Convertible. I am about to purchase a 2017 F55 S that is fully loaded. One of the key things I wanted to be able to do is upgrade the headunit to be able to support CarPlay. I have already confirmed that the car will support it.

What parts would I need?

Can I use the bimmercode app to fully code it on my own? Or do I need someone else to code it?

Is there a write up on how to do the coding?

Thanks!

Do you have the 6.5" screen or the 8.8"?

My car has:
8.8 Screen
Navigation
Wired pack
Touch dial Controller below armrest

As far as I can tell the only things I need are a new headhunt and wifi adapter. A touch screen is also preferred for newer firmware?

Trying to figure out where the best place to buy it and do coding. Bimmertech quoted me $1750 for just the coded headhunt, which I have come to learn is a bit steep.

Yeah that’s correct. You could try Ebay for the head unit but they are more difficult to come across at a decent price. The WiFi antenna is cheap at about $20 if you go aftermarket or $50 ish if you go the BMW route. Personally the touch screen is perfect in the MINI, to use with CarPlay, but I do have an i3 that doesn’t have a touch screen and it’s still pretty easy to use.

How were you able to confirm this?
Dealer told me it was not possible.
I have a loaded 2017 F55 S and it's driving me nuts to not have CarPlay.

The dealer is not going to tell you that you can. Partially because they may not be aware of it, and partially because even if they are aware, you are replacing the brain of the stereo

talk to BimmerTech and they can let you know if your car can be upgraded.

yes you need the MINI Nbt EVO id5/6 hu, preferably one with hw 3.1 minimum for touchscreen and yes the Wifi cable.
you will need to keep a constant lookout on eBay, also don’t buy the bmw Nbt EVO hu as you will need an atm emulator as they don’t come with the black gps port.

a unit will cost about $800 these days, coding about 150-300.

i have a few HW 3.1 and up EVOs, a couple ATMs (still need emulator for it's a bit complicated to make this work via coding), and can flash to work. PM me if you need help.

Do you have MINI EVOs with HW higher than 3.1?

No impossible to find. Just flashed 2 HW 3.1 from id4 to id5. Testing them. Not too many issus or reboots at all so far

Isn’t id4 on lower HW versions with lower ram etc? I’ve never heard or seen a mini with ID4 on a HU with HW 3.1...BMW tho, well that’s a different story.

You're right with the id4 hw 3.1 mini evos. They have very small chance of reboots. Much higher for BMW interface. Mini hw 3.1 is made on same platform as i3 and i8 evos.

I was able flash the 2 id4 hw 3.1 mini headunit a few days ago. I thought it wasn't possible. I even activated carplay and all services (maps, RTTI, vim). I can activate any Evo headunit with full set of FSC matched to vim immediately.

See pics. I'm gonna continue to work out some small issues and then get a definite answer on the reboot situation. Seems like everyone has a strong opinion with no facts to back it up. That way if people want a cheaper alternative. They have one.

One of them is ECE but also i can do a region change. European mini evo headunit doesn't have dab. Just no sdars.

Dope! You got this on lock man, very impressed. I tried with an ID4 and gave up, stuck in a boot loop and sitting in my garage.
How about that full screen CarPlay?

Full screen carplay is no go for now.

If you send me that id4 I'll get it back up and running. No black screens no reboots. I'll do it for free. Just ship it and ship it back to yourself.
