Question Navi upgrade/ CarPlay help

Hello Community,

I’ve been looking all over the forums and have found snippets of information, but I’m having trouble finding out exactly what I need. My wife has a 2018 mini countryman (F60) with the basic 6.5 inch radio (without nav) which from what I gather is the idrive4. I am trying to get Apple CarPlay in the most cost effective

way possible. I think I found that I can keep the 6.5 screen rather than upgrading to 8.8 inch screen to save money or perhaps I’ll have to get a new one, but it’ll still be less than a new larger one (but if it’s only the difference of a couple hundred I’d consider the larger). I believe I need the CarPlay Mimi amongst other things? I saw this on bimmertech’s site:

* Apple CarPlay is available for some CIC /NBT/NBT Evo ID4 iDrives as an aftermarket retrofit from BimmerTech (CarPlay MMI).

Also I thought I saw somewhere on this forum that I don’t need to get a touch screen to use Apple CarPlay, but rather I can still use the controller even if it’s not ideal (again to save some money).

please advise me on everything I need to make this happen.

This will be a great surprise for my wife!

Thanks in advance!

Hi, I have the 2018 MINI COOPER COUNTRYMAN F60 with 6.5" screen & a basic iDrive controller which looks like part #6317694 and the joystick can swing only sideways and my car system does not have maps on it.
I wish to upgrade to the fancy iDrive controller part #9332289.I wish to know if this would be a simple swap without coding?.secondly can some one help me with the steps involved to get this idrive swap done?.Thanks.

you'd need the following:

1. EVO headunit (id5/id6)
2. make your own wiring harness / install your current pinouts from your head unit into a 40 pin (my headunit was a weird 42 pin connector that was new to the 2019 model year for HU-B, which is the 6.5" screen with no other options
3. ATM module (for some reason my 2019 F55S came with ATM-4G. Very strange tbh, but I would check.
4. New CID and screen (touch if you want) along with trim pieces
5. iDrive controller (touch or non touch, new models don't have the touch because 609 was taken away replaced by 6UM), either has 7 buttons with navigation button
6. second microphone for voice controls and input
7. various connector pins for wiring of BDC, atm, and new EVO hu

probably missing a few things, but those are the big ticket items.

Coding would require you to:

1. flash the headunit to your vin (if you don't want to use an emulator, if you do, then add emulator up to the top list)
2. if you don't have ATM, you would either get an emulator along with the ATM, code to the donor ATM's vin, and then code the headunit to that VIN also. Then you would need a CAN filter to make your car think those 2 vins match your VIN.
3. wire everything correctly before doing steps 1 and 2
4. Buy a FSC set (from FSCMaps or equivalent) to activate navigation, VIM, Carplay, and RTTI.

It's all very complicated for I've worked on this project for a few months now.

PM me if you need help/ have questions
