Product Review: SPI is at it again! eShift

I was on the phone with SPI about my custom twincharger kit and they mentioned that they have this new shift light. I figured if their turbo kit is this high quality their shift light must be too! And I was right . So I had to pick it up along with the twincharger kit, especially for the super cheap $79.00 price tag, which is great for this poor college student. So my only mods will be this shift light and a twincharger kit, everything else stock, tires, exhaust, everything because I won't have a dime to my name after this credit card bill. But after graduation expect a beast. Here is a short review I wrote up on this shift light, still waiting for the twincharger kit and will post a review when I get it!

Product description:
Shift light that plugs directly into your cigarette light and needs no hard wiring. Completely stand-alone.

Place purchased:
Sharp Precision Instruments, 1-877-SHOP-SPI for only $79.00

Installation difficulty:
Really easy, you just plug it into your cigarette lighter.

Product performance:
Setup was really easy, it took about 1.5 minutes. Initial tests when I was driving showed this shift light to be dead on accurate.

Strengths:
- Extremely cheap
- Easy to install
- Don't need to cut up harness
- Can mount anywhere

Weaknesses:
- Can't think of any now but will edit if I do!

Overall rating (from 1 to 10): 10 Superb Product!

Pardon my ignorance, but I don't see how this could work. The shift light is for telling you when the rpm's are high enough that you need to shift, right? Since the only interaction this device has is with the cigarette lighter, is it somehow reading rpm's from the lighter socket? That's bizarre.

Perhaps some sort of gyroscope or vibration monitor to determine when to shift. I dunno. Just guessing.

What are the ***** on it for? Perhaps to set RPM for shifting?

The electrical systems in most cars experience "pulses" due to the ignition. It may be possible to "read" rpm, or at least a multiple of rpm, by monitoring the voltage in the cigarette lighter and applying complex filtering to it. I believe that the G-Tech claims to work this way, but some MINI users have had mixed results.

Yes this does work from the cigarette lighter because of the "pulses" due to the ignition system, from there the RPMs are determine. You have to rev your car to the desired RPM to shift at and it determines the pulses at that point and when it sees it again it blinks! Here are installed pics

Glad you like the eSHIFT WildcatKC!
The plug and play installation through the cigarette lighter is for those who want a quick, non permanent installation. Weekend racers or autocrossers who want a removeable shift light for the event only or for those who drive different vehicles and want to move the shift light from car to car...sort of like a radar detector, can take advantage of this wiring option.
Otherwise, the unit also comes with a hard wire option where you can connect the unit to a 12 volt fused source and locate the control box and shift light in a convenient as well as fixed location.

I got one of these too. It’s great!
I was looking at others, but they all wanted me to cut the coil pack wires for the tach pulse. I had the eShift installed and working in less than 5 minutes.

Um..

Why don't you just look at your tach or learn the feel of your car, and then shift?

$79 bux seems like a waste for something so entirely unnecessary.

I have learned the feel of my car, but it will be nice to have while racing when I don't wan't to look down at any time. I'm hoping the bright light will give me a visual cue when I'm reaching the top of the RPM's. That coupled with the seat of my pants, will let me decide whether to shift or not before the next turn. I won't use it every-day.

Now I've got to find a good spot to mount the indicator where I can see it with my helmet on... perhaps on top of the dash right in the middle.

Did you really just call yourself a "poor college student" in the same post where you talk about buying a twincharger, and post pictures of your Defi gauges?
